Graduate Internship Scheme Guidelines and Timeline 2017/18

As part of our Employability Strategy, the University will be funding 11 internships through the Sheffield Graduate Internship scheme for 2017/18. The internships provide valuable developmental opportunities for graduates to gain work experience in delivering specific projects across the University.

  • Internships are full time, for a period of six months, starting 8th January 2018.
  • Interns will be paid £16,654 per annum, pro-rata (Grade 3.1).
  • Central funding covers 50% of the costs: the host department contribution is around £5,300 (including on costs).
  • Departments can extend the placement, for a maximum additional period of six months at their own cost.
  • A graduate development programme runs as part of the internship scheme. This is designed and delivered by the Human Resources, Learning and Development team.

The scheme will only be available to University of Sheffield graduates who have graduated from an Undergraduate course within the last academic year and who are eligible to work full-time within the UK.

The Graduate Internship scheme is a valued initiative and as such we receive more proposals for internship opportunities than we are able to fund. Therefore, a selection process is applied that is overseen by the Steering Group in order to determine which proposals are accepted.

Having reflected upon last year’s scheme, we aim in 2017/18 to offer at least one internship project to each faculty, proposals for internship projects have to demonstrate one of the three key areas of contribution;

  • Support for research
  • Support for teaching
  • A contribution towards another key theme of University corporate strategy.

To make a proposal for a Graduate Intern project please complete the attached proposal form and send it to . The deadline for applications is 12.00 noon, Monday 6th November 2017.

If you require any further information about the scheme please email the address above or visit our website at

Key points:

  • Interns will be invited to an initial welcome event as well as Graduate Development sessions held over the course of the internships. This will include a general induction for all interns however departments will need to provide a local induction in addition to this.
  • Interns should be provided with a clear outline of their activities/project and set objectives against the project(s) deliverables.
  • Interns must have a specific line manager who is able to support and supervise them through their internship and be able to meet frequency if needed to monitor progress.
  • Interns will be aligned to a coach during their internship who can provide further support.
  • Interns will be employed on a fixed term contract and will be subject to standard terms and conditions.
  • Interns will have access to Careers Service support throughout their Internships.
  • There will be a celebratory event at the end of the internship to recognise achievements made.
