BYE-LAWS RELATING TO MEMBERSHIP

Members shall be elected in accordance with the Articles of Association. For the purposes of the Bye-Laws, Members of the Institute shall be divided into corporate and non-corporate members. Corporate members shall be Full Members, Fellows and Honorary Fellows who were Full Members or Fellows at the time of their election as Honorary Fellows. Corporate members shall be bound by the Memoranda and Articles of Association of the Institute and they alone shall enjoy the full rights and privileges of membership (including the right to vote at all meetings of the Institute). Non-corporate members shall also be bound by the Memoranda and Articles of Association and have such rights, privileges and obligations (excluding voting rights) as are prescribed therein and in the Bye-laws. Non-corporate members shall be Students, Associates and other Honorary Fellow.

STUDENT - Undergraduate

A Student Member shall be a registered student of Science or Technology over 18 years of age, under such conditions as satisfy Council. Each student who does not apply for and attain a higher grade of membership within 5 years of the date of his/her admission as a Student Member shall cease to be a Student Member on expiration of such period, provided nevertheless that the Council may from time to time, upon receipt of a written application from a student member, allow him/her to remain a Student member for a number of further periods not exceeding in the aggregate five years

STUDENT - Postgraduate

A Postgraduate Student Member shall be a registered student of Science or Technology, under such conditions as satisfy Council.

ASSOCIATE

This grade is for persons whose qualifications may not correspond with those for other grades of membership (e.g. those who do not have a background in science or technology) who are eligible for Associate status by virtue of their activities in the food industry. Associate members may also be nominated by the President and are elected by a two-thirds majority of Council.

FULL MEMBER

This is the basic professional grade of membership of the Institute. A Full Member shall be a person who either:

a)  Has an appropriate university degree with first or second class honour,

OR has attained equivalent academic or professional qualification; together with the appropriate professional experience in food science or technology, amounting to at least three years if the degree or academic qualification is in food science or technology, or at least four years if the degree or academic or professional qualification is in another acceptable discipline;

OR has passed such examination as the Institute may hold for the purpose

b)  OR has a appropriate degree or academic or professional qualification accepted by Council as evidence of adequate educational attainment together with appropriate experience in food science or food technology, amounting to a minimum of four years, five years or six years respectively, as determined by Council, dependent on the nature of the degree or academic or professional qualification.

c)  OR has, in the opinion of Council, an established reputation as a food scientist or food technologist acquired by his/her experience and attainments over a period of ten years and provided that not more than two such persons shall be admitted in any calendar year.

Full Members are elected at the sole discretion of a two-thirds majority of Council.

FELLOW

A Fellowship is the senior grade of membership in the Institute. A member must be proposed by Council to become a Fellow and must fulfil all the following requirements.

1.  Fulfil the requirements of full membership.

2.  Have attained at least 10 years appropriate professional experience in food science or technology.

3.  Applicants must EITHER

a.  Offer evidence to the satisfaction of a majority of Council that he/she has made a substantial contribution to the science or technology of food, OR

b.  That he/she has reached a position of seniority and authority in the profession acceptable to Council. Members who fulfil the requirements of Fellowship may apply to Council seeking Fellowship or may be nominated by the President. The election of a Member to Fellowship requires the consent of a two-thirds majority of Council
