Grade Calculation

GRADE CALCULATION

Your grade in the class will be based on 3 quizzes (the lowest quiz grade is dropped), a final exam, and 2 homework assignments. The weights are as follows.

Homework 10% (Each homework 5%)

Quizzes 60% (Each quiz 20%)

Final exam 30%

Each quiz, homework, and the final exam will be assigned a letter grade. For the homework, full credit is assigned a letter grade of A, half credit C, and no credit F. Each letter grade is converted to a numerical grade on a four point scale. The point values are as follows.

A 4.0

A- 3.6

B+ 3.3

B 3.0

B- 2.6

C+ 2.3

C 2.0

C- 1.6

D+ 1.3

D 1.0

D- 0.6

F 0.0

Your final point value is a weighted average of the point values for the 2 homework assignments, 3 quizzes, and final exam. The formula for calculating your final point value is as follows.

Final point value = 0.05*(homework#1) + 0.05*(homework#2) +0.2*(quiz#1) + 0.2*(quiz#2)

+ 0.2*(quiz#3) + 0.3*(exam)

The final grade scale is as follows.

Grade Final Point Value

A 3.76 - 4.0

A- 3.46 - 3.75

B+ 3.16 - 3.45

B 2.76 - 3.15

B- 2.46 - 2.75

C+ 2.16 - 2.45

C 1.76 - 2.15

C- 1.46 - 1.75

D+ 1.16 - 1.45

D 0.76 - 1.15

D- 0.46 - 0.75

F 0.00 - 0.45

Example:

Suppose you have the following grades on your homework, quizzes, and exam.

Letter Grade Number Grade Weight

Homework #1 Full credit, A 4 0.05

Homework #2 Half credit, C 2 0.05

Quiz #1 A 4 0.2

Quiz #2 C+ 2.3 0.2

Quiz #3 B- 2.6 0.2

Exam A- 3.6 0.3

Your final point value is calculated as follows.

Final Point value = 0.05*(4) + (0.05)*(2) + 0.2*(4) + 0.2*(2.3) + 0.2*(2.6) + 0.3*(3.6)

= 0.2 + 0.1 + 0.8 + 0.46 + 0.52 + + 1.08

= 3.16

Your final grade is a B+
