Grade 2 Sample Lesson Plans Using Technology with Common Core Standards

Grade Level / Subject Area / Standard(s) / Lesson
2 / Language Arts / RI.2.5, RL.2.7, SL.2.2, SL.2.5 / Second Grade Travels
After reading an appropriate section from this or an alternate book, students are encouraged to bring or send an imaginary friend some place in the world for an adventure. After each imaginary friend is returned to the class, students use Google Earth to locate and place mark at least five places the friends from class have traveled. Students choose a few states within the United States and a couple of countries on other continents. Have your students try this activity and then look up the distance the imaginary friend traveled to various places. See if students can find out how long it would take to get there from your school’s location. Students can also explore those locations when finished. Using the GoogleEarth app or Google Maps online, students will be able to see all the locations the “friend” from your class traveled to this year. This engaging lesson satisfiesRI.2.5, as students will get to know and use various text features and to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently, specifically with the Google Earth app or program. Students can also recount or retell the story about the “friend”, including where their “friend” has traveled. This can be illustrated and narrated in a Sway slideshow. This activity satisfies RL.2.7. Slideshows can then be saved to a class shared book, which can be available to other students. This would then satisfy SL.2.2 and SL.2.5.
2 / Social Studies / L.2.4e, SL.2.2, SL.2.5 / ECONOMY LESSON
For classes with access to BrainPop, this is a social studies lesson on the economy with technology. BrainPOP has several videos on the economy that explore needs, wants, goods, and services. Discuss the definitions, as well as examples of each. Having students take notes in One Note would be beneficial. Using the BrainPOP vocabulary guide, or other online dictionaries, students can clarify the meanings of the vocabulary words: needs, wants, goods, and services. Having students look up words to gain clarity is a nice way to satisfy L.2.4e and help students determine or clarify meanings of words. Two of our former colleagues each had a different and unique way to assess this lesson. Students can use Sway to write, draw examples, and record what they learned about goods, services, needs, and wants. SL.2.2 is satisfied with this project by describing key ideas or details and presenting them through other media. SL.2.5 is also satisfied by adding visual displays to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
2 / Mathematics / MP5, RI.2.5, W.2.6, SL.2.2, SL.2.5, MP.2.5 / MONEY ACTIVITIES
Second grade studentslearn about money, specifically making change. This activity can span several days and it can be differentiated easily. Beforehand, identify several sites that sell children’s toys. Divide your students into pairs or groups of three. Each team is given a toy site and $500 to “spend” as they go “shopping.” Students keep track of what they buy and how much it costs, as well as subtracting it from their $500 so they know how much change is left. The team closest to $0 is the winner. However, the fun doesn’t stop there! Teams need to prove how they spent their money. Using Sway, students design their presentation showing how they spent their money. The presentation should include text features they have learned about, such as title pages and headings. This will satisfy RI.2.5, knowing and using various text features learned. Students can copy and paste pictures of their purchases from their site. You may need additional adults to help supervise this activity. Presentations are shown to the class by each team. Don’t be surprised if you have some students “challenge” results found! Having students collaborate with others, as well as accept guidance and support from adults, will satisfy W.2.6. Writing and presenting the account of how students spent their money will address SL.2.2 and SL.2.5, describing key ideas or details and presenting orally using other media. This would also cover the MP.2.5 by using digital tools to enhance mathematical learning.
