Room 128 November Newsletter Mlle. Kahana

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween and the Pumpkin Stroll. I can’t believe it’s already November. Here is a summary of what’s going on this month in our classroom.

Literacy– French

Reading Comprehension Strategies: This month we will continue to work on making connections, both text to self, and text to world. We will also continue to work on describing story elements, and on story retells (Beginning, Middle and End). We will be looking at various Science-related themes such as plants and the environment. Students will be encouraged to make reading responses to books they have read in class or at home, by writing about what they liked or didn’t like about a book, making connections, drawing pictures, etc. (They can also do this for their English reading). I will begin guided reading with small groups of students.

Writing:We will continue with descriptive writing, paragraphs and letter writing.

Literacy– English

As in French, the students will be listening to stories related to Science, and also to Remembrance Day. They will continue working on visualization and making connections, story retells, as well as on considering the author’s message.

Writing: The students will continue to develop their skills paragraph writing, and work on letter writing, as in French. Students will be working on answering questions about a story they have heard, incorporating both details from the text and their own ideas into their answer.

Media: Students will be watching media texts, and consider what message is being delivered through these media texts (e.g. a short video).

Math

We will be focusing on Patterning this month. Students will be working on extending and identifying growing and shrinking patterns (e.g. 2, 4. 6…), and, identifying, describing and extending repeating patterns. We will also continue to practice mental math strategies, and problem solving.

Science : Grade 3: Plants Social Stuides:Mapping (Both Grades)

Grade 2: Solids and Liquids/ Air and Water

Art: Students will experiment with creating art in the style of a well-known artist (e.g. Van Gogh, Emily Carr).

As mentioned on the blog, there will be two grade-specific field trips this month. The Grade 3’s are going to the R.B.G., and the Grade 2’s are going to the Hamilton Children’s Museum. Please see the November calendar for dates for these trips. Permission forms for the Grade 2 trip will be going home soon.

As we are now into colder weather, remember to label your chlid’s hat, mittens or gloves, scarf etc. in case they are misplaced.

Sincerely,

Melanie Kahana
