AUTUMN TERM

Aim: Governors to develop their understanding of their school improvement area

Autumn Term 1

·  Headteacher circulates draft School Improvement Plan (SIP) to governors and staff in first half of term.

·  At the first Full Governing Board meeting of the term, governors approve SIP and assign themselves to an area of the SIP to monitor. Governors and Senior Leadership Team agree date for SIP Q&A evening session.

·  Headteacher prepares monitoring calendar and sends out completed action plans for their areas to the Board.

·  Governors agree dates for the Governors SIP Visits Week, to be held in the second half of the Spring Term.

Autumn Term 2

·  Governor teams to attend Joint SLT and GB SIP Q&A session and to bring pre-prepared questions which should be challenging and pertinent to their area of the SIP. If governors are finding it difficult to prepare questions, they could use some of the following:

◦  What are you trying to achieve in this area of the school improvement plan?

◦  What difference will this make for children?

◦  How will this benefit the most disadvantaged children?

◦  What will success look like/how will you know when you have achieved it?

◦  Can you identify any potential barriers to success?

◦  What support would be needed to overcome these?

·  Key learning points arising from the question and answer session should be recorded below, together with a record of any next steps required and then sent to the Clerk to Governors by the end of the term, so that they can be collated.

·  Clerk to circulate reports to GB in Spring Term 1 so governors can question and discuss key point/identified.

Spring Term 1

·  Autumn Term monitoring reports to be discussed at the first Full GB meeting of the term.

·  All governor teams to arrange to meet with their lead member(s) of staff during Governors Visits Week, including agreeing what the visit will involve.

·  The visit should focus on the governor team's area of the SIP and can involve:

◦  spending time in classrooms,

◦  visiting areas of the school to see example of progress,

◦  talking to other staff and children to find out what difference the school improvement work is making for all children and any groups of children in particular,

◦  looking at children's books.

·  Governors should note that they are not required to make any judgments or assessment during their visit, but should focus on identifying what they have learned that they did not know before, and whether this raises any new questions for the lead member(s) of staff, the Headteacher or the Governing Board.
