Moodle Calendar Introductionv2013

Students have two digital calendar facilities. This handout will get you started in using the Moodle calendar but see also the handout on Google calendars.

1. Moodle Calendar

Login to Moodle ( and click on the My Moodle link at the top left of the Moodle home page.

At the top right of the page is your Moodle Calendar showing the current month.

The shaded squares show various types of event while the black lined square shows the current date.

NB: The colours will vary according to the colour Theme you have set for your profile (this theme is Formal White).

Global Events

Eg 7 & 14 are added by the Moodle Administrator and are for the college as a whole.

User Events

Eg 10 & 23 are added by you and are your personal event reminders.

Course Events

Eg 25 are added by your tutors to Moodle modules that you are enrolled on and all students on the course see the same event.

Group Events

These are like course events except only students who are in the same Moodle group as you see the event.

Although clicking on an event will present details for that event, it is better to click on the Month/Year heading to see a Month View of you calendar.

continued on p2 ….

A detailed month view.

From this page you can see 1 month before and after now, hide/show different types of event, choose events from a particular course or add a new personal event.

Click on the New Event button.

Add details and dates/times of the event.

Click on the Save button. You can edit or delete the event, add more events or go to the month view.

You can also export your Moodle calendar (see page 3 for further details).

I would tend to use the Moodle calendar for most of my study and personal reminders and share the Cloud Calendar with friends so that we can arrange social events.

Why Use The Moodle Calendar?

This calendar is great because it pulls together, in one place, all the events from your different Moodle modules and whole college events (not to mention the personal events you add).

Used regularly, you shouldn’t miss a deadline again (for yourself or your tutors).

Why Have a Google Calendar Too?

Unlike Moodle, the Google calendar has a really good feature – you can share your calendar with other people.

Merging Calendars

As I share my Google calendar with others, I need to add details to it from my Moodle calendar (I do the following steps every few weeks).

From the Moodle month view (see top of p2) click on the Export Calendar button.

Choose All Events and Recent and next 60 days then click on Export.

Save the .ics file to your computer.

Now go to your Google Calendar and Settings then Calendarsand click on Import Calendar.

Browse for the .ics file you saved from before and click on the Import button.

You will get a confirmation message, click on the Close button and return to your calendar.

NB: Although you can export the Google calendar, you cannot then import it into Moodle.

NB: This Export process just adds events from Moodle to Google (deleting an event from Moodle and re-exporting the calendar doesn’t delete the event from the Google calendar).

See Google Calendar Help at:

Also, look out for more handouts like these on using your Google Calendar.
