Golf Handout

The origin of the game of golf has never been clearly established. The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches. Book illustrations show the Dutch playing a similar game on their frozen canals about the 15th century. Scotland is the home of the world's oldest golf course, St. Andrews, in the 16th c.

Vocabulary

Birdie - When you play a hole in golf, there is a set score, or par, that you are expected to make. If you get the ball in the hole with one hit less than that score, you have hit birdie.

Bogie - When you play a hole in golf, there is a set score, or par, that you are expected to make. If you get the ball in the hole with one hit more than that score, you have hit a bogie.

Chip - A short, lofted shot from around the green.

Drive- A tee shot that is usually hit with a driver (1wood).

Eagle - When you play a hole in golf, there is a set score, or par, that you are expected to make. If you get the ball in the hole with two hits less than that score, you have hit eagle.

Par - When you play a hole in golf, there is a set score, or par, that you are expected to make. If you get the ball in the hole with that number of hits, you have made par. If you take more hits, you are over par. If you take fewer hits, you are under par.

Safety - The most important safety factor is responsibility! Be responsible for both yourself and others playing with you. Always check and make sure no person are standing within your swing zone, and never stand with another person’ swing zone. Never hit in the direction of another player. If your ball is traveling in the direction of another player, you should yell “FORE”! This lets other golfers know a ball is traveling in their direction. Remember, always stand behind the person hitting the ball, not beside them, and make sure everyone is standing behind you when hitting a ball

Equipment- Maximum number of clubs is 14. Irons include clubs 2 through 9 and a wedge. Woods include clubs, 1,3,4, and 5. Also included in a set of clubs is a putter. Typically, each club will differ in distance by 10 yards (a 2 iron may hit 150 yards, therefore a 3 iron would hit 140 yards, and a 4 iron 130 yards.)

Grip- Ten finger- Baseball style

Overlapping – right hand pinky finger overlaps your index finger on your left hand

Interlocking – right hand pinky finger interlocks with your index finger on your left hand

Stance- Square stance- the ball should lie to the inside of your front foot. Your feet need to be should width apart. Finally, make sure your hips and shoulders are square to the target line.

Etiquette-

At the Tee

- always maintain silence while waiting for others to tee off

- sit or stand quietly when someone is hitting

- never tee off until those ahead of you are out of range

- tee off quickly as possible if others are waiting

On the Fairway

-always play in turn so that the ball farthest from the green is hit first.

-always replace divots and stamp them into place

-signal for the next players to play through if a ball is lost

-never approach a green until the player ahead has left the green

In the Sand

-take the most direct route to the ball-this will avoid unnecessary footprints in the sand
