Soil Analysis

Soil observations:
Use the paper towel and the magnifying glass to observe the soil at your site.
pH
  1. put a spoonful of soil in a dish
  2. add 10 ml water
  3. measure pH

Pollution:
List the type and quantity of any human trash that you observe
Soil separation and Tullgren funnel tests / Collect 1 ziplock bag of soil from your site to bring back to the classroom. We will set up a soil separation test and a Tullgren funnel test when we return to class.

Vegetation Survey

  1. collect ONE leaf or blade of grass from every different type of plant you find (don’t pull up the roots!!!)
  2. tape the sample in an empty square
  3. count or estimate the number of individual plants of this type at your site (look for the root stalk)
  4. pick a representative plant and measure its height (in cm)
  5. on your map, outline and label the places in your site where this plant is found
  6. we will identify the names of the plants back in the classroom

Insect Survey

  1. draw a picture of each insect you find in an empty square (DO NOT HARM ANY INSECTS!)
  2. count or estimate the number of insects of this type at your site
  3. on your map, outline and label the places in your site where this insect is found
  4. we will identify the names of the insects back in the classroom
