STEP UP TO THE PLATE 24 BASEBALL MARATHON A HIT!!!!!
The 2011 Charity Baseball Marathon to benefit cystic fibrosis, juvenile diabetes and prostate cancer research a rousing success thanks to the participation of current and former GAB players and their families!
13 current and former GAB players joined a group of 87 players participating in the 5th annual 24 hour baseball game for charity. The game lasted for 80 innings and yielded a combined 669 at bats, 189 hits, 108 runs and almost $20,000 raised for charity. Some notable moments occurred: including the reunion of the three Boice boys (Jason, Jesse and Jeff) on the field; and the Neild brothers (Kris and Nick) facing off on opposite teams. In addition, Chris Clinton was the only player in the event to never miss an at bat (30 plate appearances) during the event. Not to be outdone, GAB players, Marty Pollard (11 innings), Ben Sellew (10 innings), Drew Hetherington (5 innings) and Jason Boice (5 innings) lead all groups in combined innings pitched. Pollard and Kris Neild also led all players with 5 and 6 runs scored apiece. GAB board member Mike Clinton also had 10 hits in the game which was the second most hits in the event.
GAB also proudly had the most players participate from any organization in the event and Connecticut Baseball Charitable Foundation, Inc. President proclaimed that “the Step Up To The Plate Charity Baseball Marathon would not be the great success it has been without the support of GAB players, families and the Board. On behalf of the event committee, we collectively thank the entire GAB family.”
The Step Up To The Plate Charity Baseball Marathon continues to accept donations on its web site and GAB encourages our players and families to support this important event by making a donation!

Glastonbury Pirates off to a 3-1 Start in the Manchester Twilight League
The Manchester Twilight League is an 18 and up wood bat baseball league centralized in Manchester, CT. The league includes teams from Bristol, Tri-County, Willimantic, East Windsor, East Hartford, Newington, New Britain, and Glastonbury.
The Glastonbury Pirates team is made up of all GHS graduates, graduating from 98 to just a few years ago. The team has gotten off to a great start only giving up 2 runs in its first three games, with solid pitching from Bill Eller, Pat Jergel, and Matt Spence.
Pirates 0, Willimantic 1
In Glastonbury’s first game runs were hard to come by with good performances by both pitchers; the game was knotted at 0 until the top of the 6th inning. Willimantic squeaked a run across with a base hit to center field. In the bottom of the 6th inning the Pirates had a chance to tie the game on a base hit by Nick Martino, but Greg Jordan was gunned down on a close play at the plate, but to this day still claims he was safe. The Pirates rallied again in the bottom of the 7th just to fall shot, and leaving the bases loaded.
Pirates 5, East Windsor 0
The Pirates struck early in this game with a lead off hit from Mikey Kelley, and an RBI single from Nick Martino to put Glastonbury up 1-0. This trend continues in the 3rd inning; after a few walks Greg Jordan hit a bases loaded single to put the Pirates up 5-0. This is where the game stayed thanks to a shut-out pitching performance from Pat Jergel.
Pirates 4, Tri-County 1
Matt Spence pitched a terrific game for the Pirates going the distance and only giving up one run. The Pirates played solid fundamental baseball to score the runs they needed to win the game.
Pirates 7, East Hartford 6
The Pirates got off to a rough start falling into a 6-1 hole in the first 2 innings. The
Pirates grinded it out to score run after run in until the game was tied. Marty Pollard had a pair of RBI singles during this comeback to put the game into extra innings. Mike Karanda lead the top of the 8th off with a walk, Jordan bunted him to 2nd. Next up was Jason Boice, who had been swinging a hot bat, who doubled to give Glastonbury the lead and the win.
