This season we will be raising money for PlayPumps International. PlayPumps International’s mission is help improve the lives of children and their families by providing easy access to clean drinking water, enhancing public health, and offering play equipment to millions across Africa. You can find out more information about this awesome organization at Every week, each team is asked to donate the cost of one pitcher of delicious beer ($10) to our charity. Captains can give their team's donation to Grace Webster (from team Afternoon Delight in the tie-dyed shirts), who will keep track of weekly donations. The team that donates the most money to PlayPumps International will receive a round of free pitchers at the end of the season. Please contact Grace at if you have any questions or comments.

III. Team Recaps:

Afternoon Delight

The Game:

With an early season match-up against one of our (friendly) rivals from previous seasons, Kick In A Box (formerly the Pandas), our team came out with another stellar performance en route to a 7-0 victory. Our defense was on top of their game, as usual, and we were able to hold our opponent without a run for the second straight week. We started of the game on the right foot (pun intended), by getting our consistent lead-off kickers Steve and Clare in scoring position, followed up by solid kicks by Eric (no he didn't foul out this time - surprise I know), Renato, Grace, and Joe to end the first inning with a 3-0 lead. We can't say enough about our defense, we are like a well-oiled machine out there, even getting out of a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the 3rd inning that could have changed the game. League-MVP candidate at 2nd base, Grace, with the Sports Center Top 10 Nominee catch and throw to Eric for the double-play. We were then able to tack on 4 more runs between the 3rd and 4th innings for the 7-0 lead. A couple plays of note from this week: Eric's over the shoulder catch, Natalie's nice catch at 2nd, and Loren's all around game, hustling like crazy at catcher, topped off with the last play of the game that epitomizes Loren's dedication to the team with a diving throw to first base for the final out. Again, another solid effort all around, contributions from up and down the line-up, both kicking and fielding. I mean, can you really complain about anything when you win 7-0?

The Bar:

A couple of us decided to stick around and ref and/or watch the 7:15 game between Green Death and Logan Circle Legends (great game by the way), while others were ready to head to the bar for some flip cup. The bar was much less crowded this week as I think most regular patrons realized that Tuesdays are going to be those days where those kickball kids are going to show up. We were able to set up the flip cup tables in the back, and have people who wanted to eat/relax towards the front of the bar, and they played good music this week, which made it a good time. Once we were able to get our full team together, we got Kick In A Box to have our "official" flip cup match underway. After much shit talk, a couple games, and an amazing "full-cup flip-off" victory by Joe R (there are pictures), we found ourselves with a commanding 3-1 lead (or so we thought). We then proceeded to lose our next two games, and had a deciding game 7 to settle the score. It was back-and-forth with both teams going flip for flip with Grace narrowly edging them out for the 4-3 victory. After that, a couple of us took some shots, some of us "re-connected" with opposing teammates, maybe danced some Soldier Boy with Ryan and Bruce, and had a good time with the remaining teams at the bar. I believe we had 8 of us stick around until 11 pm which is always good to see. Next week, hopefully we can get a couple more of you to stick around.

Quotes of the Night:

1.) As Clare steps up to kick....Katie: "Yea! Go Big C!"

2.) After losing 7-0, Pete from Kick In A Box proposes to Elizabeth followed by....Eric: "Well, at least he will score once tonight."

3.) And a text from our favorite roommate of a team member...."Oh for the love. Who is this boy I just had to get out of bed and open the door for?"

Green Death

Sent from Miles at 9:38pm last night:

Dear Team,

Despite my early suckage, you guys rallied for the 4 of 7 win. Don't F with Green Deaf!

Miles

Sent from me this afternoon:

Green Death,

I sincerely apologize for the delayed game recap. I have been very busy today trying to organize my life today. Korchak comes home tomorrow, so I have spent most of the day sprinkling our apartment with rose petals and putting out the scented candles.

So we played the Logan Circle Legends (light blue) last night. After four innings, it looked like the game was going to be a pitchers duel just like last week, with LCL beating us 1-0. It takes a couple of games to get everyone back in midseason kicking shape, especially our free agent pickups. But don't worry, we had Mitch + the top of our lineup due up in the fifth. We started the inning off with three singles to load the bases for my favorite co-captain, Jenny. In a play that really exemplified our team unity, jenny hit a 3 RBI sacrifice single/double! Somehow she overran first and started going to second, but just stopped - the other team was so confused by this base running tactic that we managed to score all three runs before they tagged her out! We piled on a few more for emphasis and closed out the bottom of the fifth with a nice unassisted double play by yours truly.

Final score: Green Death 5 - Logan Circle Legends 1

Game MVP: Jenny Larsen for her spectacular batting/base running skillz

TEAM MVP: Chloe Magner - C-Money was going full speed to second base (circa 3rd inning) and somehow managed to have her knee run in the complete opposite direction. It was quite a scare, with serious concerns that she may have torn her ACL (an all too common kickball injury). Luckily we had a nurse, med student, and Travis there to help assess the situation. With their tender loving care, chloe was diagnosed with a very sore knee, but nothing overly serious. Like a true Green Death trooper she made it to the bar and imbibed plenty of "liquid medication" to help ease the pain. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Chloe - get well soon!

Bar was awesome as always - despite some disagreements with management about drink specials - which will all be sorted out well before next tuesday. We started off strong in flip cup, but a certain team member (whose name rhymes with Styles) lost all control of his motor skills. LCL battled back to tie the series at 3-3. But just like in the kickball team, Green Death rallied together when we needed it most for a convincing game 7 win. See Miles previous photograph. For the second consecutive week, we won the LMS (Last Man Standing) with 7 people left at 11pm, barely edging out Renato's white/tie dyed team.

Through two weeks we are 2-0 in kickball, 2-0 in flip cup, and 2 for 2 in LMS. We are a team of champions, let's work hard to keep the fun going all season long!!!

Love always,

Jenny and Mike

from Kristen 5 minutes later:

While I am certainly not one to call people out - especially having missed last night's game - Malloy and I are on another listserve, where at approx. 12:30, an email went out from one Michael Malloy beginning with the sentence: "I am dficdxksdhhfuckede yp$$$$kickabll is sweeeet."

It was then that I decided never to be sick on a Tuesday, ever, again.

Logan Circle Legends

Week Two pitted the shorthanded but determined LC Legends squad against former DC Constitution playoff semi-finalists, Green Death. Before I share game details, I must commend Green Death on their choice of neon green knee-high socks. They pair so nicely with the mindboggling pink shirts! ButI digress. The Legends started off strong, plating a run in the game's first inning. The defensewas spectacularfor four innings, shutting out the hard-kicking, athletic Green Death ballers. A combination of great pitching, superb catches by the cat-like Kate Myers at second base, andseveralsmartplays that forced out lead runnersresultedin four innings of defensive mastery. Heading to the top of the fifth and leading 1-0, we were three outs away from our second consecutive (second ever?)kickball victory. However,Green Death did not go down without afight. The opponents lined several well-kicked balls to the gaps, and other balls just didn't bounce in our direction. Ouropponentstook a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning. Although two Legends singled in the 5th to make things interesting, we were unable to score, and ulitmately fell 5-1. Offensively, we were led by Bruce Chapman (2-2 with a run scored) and ScottSteinhardt (1-1with an RBI).All fifteenLegends who showed up gave it their all, and wedefinitely proved ourselves capable of hangingwith anyone in the league. Meanwhile, over at Bottom Line, we again went toe-to-toe with Green Death, this time on the flip cup table. The score was tied3-3, andthe intensity was highforthe final round. Unfortunately, we could not pull this one out either, andthe team fell 4-3.A great night of kickball andteam camaraderie came toan end, but the LC Legends look forward to next week and fully intend tohop back on the winning bandwagon.

Multiple Scorgasms

Dammit, Kickball, you have treated our team,

lately, with sure disregardand sadness

after last weeks thumping and bitter press

bywhite/tie-dye, alight of hope didgleam

thata new week brought a newchance toream

another club, with hard kicks and finesse

not this timefalling in mudin distress

We would win, this week, and with pride beam!

Steve fell on his ass, though, in centerfield,

and so theball sailed passed andruns scored

our spirits fellfrom the skies theyhad soared

Still,flip-cup called, to drink until we keeled

over from too much booze, and later snored

next to somone we just nailed like a board.
