Getting ready to start at Hutt Valley High School 2016
Dear student, parent and caregiver
Welcome to the HVHS community. We look forward to meeting you and your family at our enrolment interviews in October. Here are a few key dates and some important information that will help you to prepare for the transition to secondary school.
Year 9 Deans
The two Deans for 2016 are Mr Angus Devine and Ms Nicole Arnell. Mr Devine is also a Physical Education teacher, and 1st X1 cricket coach. Ms Arnell is an English teacher and keen supporter of cultural activities in the school. They will be the Deans of this 2016 group for the next 5 years.
Student enrolment interviews- October 12 -16th
These interviews are a very important part of a student’s transition to secondary school. It is a chance for us to meet you and begin to establish what we hope will be a positive and productive relationship over the next 5 years. The interviews will be about 20 minutes long and will be facilitated by a senior member of staff. You will be sent detailed information towards the end of Term 3.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
We encourage all students at Year 9 and 10 to bring their own digital device to school.HVHS has adopted Google Apps for Education so it is very important that the device works well in the Google-Apps environment. All device types are supported at HVHS including Android, Apple IOS and mainstream and Windows operating systems. In saying that, a Chromebook would be a sensible option. It is relatively cheap, robust, has a keyboard and has been designed specifically to use in a Google-Apps environment.
Testing
We will no longer be running a Testing Day in November. Contributing schools are going to share their academic data with us instead. We will visit our contributing schools to meet with Year 8 teachers and discuss the academic strengths and learning needs of all students.
Uniform
Uniform can be purchased at our Resource Centre. Go to the ‘Joining HVHS’ page on our website for further details.
Weekly newsletters
The Principal writes a weekly newsletter. These are available on our website at the following address:
Confirmation of out of zone enrolments will be made in writing on Wednesday 19 August. Acceptances must be with the school by Wednesday 2 September. We would be grateful if in-zone enrolments were completed by this date so that we can proceed with planning for 2016.
