Please tell us in no more than 300 words about the mission/vision of your organisation
The English Federation* of Disability Sport (EFDS) has a clear vision: “Disabled people are active for life”. The vision is translated into two broad strategic outcomes and EFDS seeks to work together with all bodies involved in developing and delivering sport and physical activity to achieve:
  • Enhanced health and wellbeing for all disabled people (physical, psychological, social and emotional wellbeing).
  • A more equal society in which disabled people can achieve through increased opportunities and choice.
All consortium partners take an evidence based approach and apply a number of agreed common principles to engage disabled people who are currently inactive. The “Talk to Me” principles are referenced throughout the bid and are attached. These principles are based on extensive research and insight which has enabled us to shape new approaches which see disabled people engaging in recreational physical activity with non-disabled people rather than in parallel sessions. Our research tells us that two out of three disabled people would prefer to be active in an inclusive setting with a mix of disabled and non-disabled people.
Our innovative approach will focus on practical solutions and create a real and lasting legacy of 2012. We will work in co-production with local inactive people on every aspect of the project and using our insight into what motivates inactive people, our project will generate sustainable participation in target areas and develop clear models of best practice that can be replicated across the UK.
*Each home nation operates as a Federation and in the case of EFDS Members they bring to the programme each English regional group plus all National Disability Sport Bodies (NDSO): British Blind Sport; CP Sport; Dwarf Sports Association; Special Olympics; Mencap Sport; WheelPower; UK Deaf Sport; LimbPower as well as a number of Associate members across the country including County Sports Partnership Network, Youth Sport Trust and Sport and Recreational Alliance.
