Get on the dance floor: “Dancê” with Tulipa Ruiz
Move the furniture out, close your eyes and let yourself go!
In 2010, Tulipa Ruiz made her debut in the independent market with the album “Efêmera”. The solar pop repertoire earned nominations for best album of the year by specialized magazines such as Rolling Stone Brasil and British newspapers, as The Guardian and The Independent. Her music played in a brazilliansoap opera and part of the Fifa videogame soundtrack. Two years later, in 2012, with “TudoTanto”, Tulipa introduced a pop rock edge. The anticipation over the second album – conventionally seen as a validation – results in more positive critics and awards(APCA, Contigo! MPB FM and Multishow as well as a nomination to the Prêmio de MúsicaBrasileira). The Brazilian music´s revelation was here to stay.
Five years later, the singer and songwriter from São Paulo is astonishing and reinvents herself with Dancê, her third album. Released on 2015,May by PommeloDistribuições, this new register is also available in all streaming platforms and digital sales.
Produced by Gustavo Ruiz – her brother, guitarist, partner in ten of the 11 new compositions and producer of all her work – Tulipa´s repertoire remains pop with its solar echoes, but this time, from beginning to end, made for dancing. ”It´s an album made to let yourself go,” explains the producer. The sonority is even denser; some tracks with a heavy dose of metals and horns, arrangements by MarcioArantes and Jacques Mathias. However, there are also songs to dance cheek to cheek. A private dance floor for all minds and generations. “An album to listen with your body. I wanted the body to have the first, immediate reaction. Then the soul” defines Tulipa.
Nominated for Latin Grammy 2015 in the category “revelation artist” and winner in the category “best pop álbum”, Tulipa, the first Brazilian indie artist to win such award, was considered by Apple Music as “the best portuguese language pop-rock of 2015” and by Rolling Stone (USA) as “the 4th best latin album of the year”
About Tulipa Ruiz
Born in Santos, raised in São Lourenço in the state of Minas Gerais, and graduated in Multimedia at PUC in São Paulo, Tulipa Ruiz and her brother Gustavo, have musical background: their father, LuizChagas is the guitarist in the avant-garde Isca de Polícia – the band which accompanied ItamarAssumpção.
However their references range from Baby do Brasil, Zezé Motta, the group Rumo and international and multimedia artists Meredith Monk and Yoko Ono, as well as Joni Mitchell. As a young girl and later in college, Tulipa experienced music as a hobby. The “real deal” only happened later in 2009, when at the time the editor and illustrator declared herself as a singer and songwriter. The drawings are still very much part of her career: in all of her album´s inserts, in collaborations with the Le Monde DiplomatiqueBrasil newspaper and in her clothing brand, Brocal, featuring her drawings as the raw material for the prints, which she launched in 2014 with her manager HeloisaAidar.
