GEORGETOWN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Minutes: September 14, 2017

PRESENT:

Karren Cowing, Ole Jaeger, David Polito, Sharon Trabona, Jim Coombs, Transfer Station manager, and Geoff Birdsall, Selectman representative.

MINUTES:

David Polito moved and Sharon Trabona seconded acceptance of the August 10, 2017 minutes, as written. The minutes were unanimously accepted.

FISCAL:

Ole Jaeger reported that $19,493.14 has been expended for hauling and tipping fees.

The contract for Modern Pest has increased by $4.00 to $82.00. The cost had increased about 2 years ago, as well. There is no requirement that the Transfer Station (TS) has to have rodent control. David moved to cancel the contract with Modern Pest. Sharon seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously. David will contact Mary McDonald, Assistant to the Selectmen/Bookkeeper, requesting that she inform Modern Pest of the Committee’s decision to cancel the contract.

The Committee received a bid of $575 from Jeremy Blalock to replace the bottom steps to the metals pile, that were previously damaged. David moved and Ole seconded accepting the bid and having Jeremy Blalock complete the project. The motion was passed unanimously.

The Valley Company came to determine the reason the compactor’s full light on. It appears that there may be a design flaw that causes an arm within the machinery to misalign and the light to come on. The technician made some adjustment and recommended that, if the problem happens again, to alter the limit switch.

Jim Coombs told Cory Montgomery, new employee, to purchase a pair of boots and the Town will reimburse.

OPERATIONS:

The old dump field has been mowed by Mainemoss.

Shawn Casey has taken another job, but will be available as back up.

E-waste will be doing a pick up on September 15th.

The metals area will be cordoned off. If a citizen arrives with a truck load, an employee will open the gate and check the load

OTHER:

Last month the committee members received an e-mail from the Town-Owned Property Management Board (TOPMB) regarding fishing gear that has been stored at the wharf. The TOPMB thought that the fishing gear could be stored at the TS temporarily. At this point the Town is waiting for direction from the Dept. of Marine Resources (DMR) on whether the Town can move this gear. Members of the Committee think that the TS is not the place for this gear to be stored. Once the Selectmen hear from DMR, then decisions will be made regarding how/where to store the gear. At this point it does not look like the TS will be the recipient.

A reminder that starting November 1 the TS will be closing at 4:00.

A different vendor is picking up the cans and bottles and the pick-upis occurring more frequently.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection will be held on Sat, October 21st in Brunswick.

NEXT MEETING:

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Karren Cowing
