Geography of Terrorism: A Case Study

Case studies in geography provide a brief overview of examination of events that impact or alter the way people function and live day to day within the human and physical environment. They are important to assist students to develop a series of “real world” examples at differing levels of scale that relate to the theoretical content they are studying. The student would be expected to prepare for the class discussions by analyzing the background data and presenting the facts and data to explain the situation in a geographic perspective. A good case study is geography will provide several key elements.

It tells a story.

It focuses on a conflict within the human environment.

It is timely, recently occurring on-going. (Last 25 years)

It creates a human sentiment of volunteerism and sympathy.

It is relevant to the reader and the area of study.

It presents a conflict provoking discussion.

It is short, concise, and to the point.

Instructions:

  1. Select one aspect of Terrorism as it applies to the area/topic being studied (Political Organization of Space)
  2. Locate and develop quick and concise understanding of the roll of Terrorism as it applies to the “Political Organization of Space” (Use the following questions).
  1. How did the global relationship happen?
  2. What is the relevant historical context?
  3. How long has this practice existed?
  4. Who is affected and how?
  5. Where? And what is the spatial extent?
  6. What is the geographical perspective?
  7. What is the scale of the relationship? Local, Regional, National, Global?
  8. What kind of terrorism are we facing in the different areas of the world? (they are different)
  9. Is there any world response? And by whom?
  10. Are there local tensions or concerns as a result of multi-national practices on Terrorism?
  11. How do we, or would we, recognize that there is a multi-national or global connection with this activity?
  12. Special remaining problems?
  1. Construct a 6 slide power point type format. The slide presentation should build on establishing the relationship, the scale of interaction and the impact and benefits at multiple levels.

Slide 1, introduces the global relationship and connectivity, the parties involved and presents the geographic setting with a map in a relative settling (Relative location – small and large scale maps)

Slides 2 – 3 responds to the causes, historical, types, impact, effects, contrary opinions to terrorism.

Slides 4 – 5 address the scale of terrorism, applicable data government and world responses, legislation, prediction for the future of the global connectivity and relevant photos.

Slide 6 includes references, and person’s name doing the powerpoint.
