Elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE, altered work practices
Subject may trip or fall on the moving belt / rare / Injure themselves / A safety harness is available and “spotters” are placed on each side of the treadmill to ensure the subject’s safety
Subject may feel faint / Rare / Fall and injure themselves / The spotters and supervisor of the test, constantly watch the subject during testing for any signs of fainting i.e. pallor, sweating, giddiness. If the patient is unable to communicate because of the test conditions, hand signals, which are predetermined prior to testing, are used
Subject may vomit / Rare / A huge smelly mess / If the subject vomits during testing, buckets are placed within easy reach of the testing area, for this use. The bins are lined and the bag can then be disposed of in the yellow biohazard bag

/ Potential to injure themselves is there, as they will be uncertain / The procedure is explained to the subject prior to the commencement of the test. If they are to be stressed physically in any way, they have to be medically checked by their GP prior to the test and/or they sign a consent form where various questions pertaining to their health are asked.Subject does not want to continue the test / Rare / Stressed / It is always explained to the subjects prior to commencement of the test, that it is entirely voluntary and that they determine the end point of the test.
Given the risks identified, specify the Health & Safety training provided to staff and/or students undertaking this activity:
Familiarisation sessions are done with the subjects a few days before testing to ensure that they are comfortable and familiar with the equipment. In case of an emergency and First Aid is required, notices are on the walls next to each phone, giving the location of the First Aid boxes and First Aid Officers.
