2017 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PACKAGE
I. APPLICATION FORM
Fill in the attached NSBE-SJP application form. Leave no blanks. If an item does not apply, indicate with “N/A”. Include full name and page number on additional sheets of paper for information that exceeds the line space provided. Sign and date the application in the space provided.
AN INCOMPLETE APPLICATION WILL BE RETURNED BUT MAY BE RESUBMITTED BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.
II. PERSONAL STATEMENT
The personal statement is a critical part of your application and is equivalent to an interview. Accordingly, it should be written to the NSBE-SJP Scholarship Selection Committee for this specific scholarship application. Personal statements addressed to other institutions or selection committees or general resumes will not be accepted. A key factor in our consideration of your application will be your explanation of your expected future contributions to society.
Submit a one to two-page typewritten personal statement describing:
a) Community involvement.
b) Student activities.
c) Honors and/or awards.
d) Career goals: State how you expect college to contribute towards those goals.
e) How you see yourself contributing to society in the future.
f) Communication Skills (Research papers, Presentations, Speeches given, etc.)
III. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Submit at least one letter of recommendation from a school, church or community official who can discuss your academic and personal achievements, motivation, self-confidence, leadership, commitment, and your potential for future success. The letter should be sent with the application or postmarked no later than June 23rd, 2017. Include the name of the school or organization from which you received this recommendation.
IV. FINANCIAL NEED STATEMENT
· Submit a copy of the Financial Need Statement that was submitted to the institution where you are/will be enrolled OR provide the first 2 pages of IRS Form 1040 (with SSNs removed) for parents filing a joint return, or for each return of two parent households that file individually, or a single return for a sole provider.
V. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT
An official (sealed) transcript of recent high school, charter school or college/university must be included in the application package or be sent by the school to the NSBE-SJP Scholarship Selection Committee. The transcript must be postmarked no later than June 23rd, 2017.
VI. PHOTOGRAPH
A recent self-portrait only paper or electronic photograph (e.g., a recent high school photo) should accompany the application package. Please do not staple the photo to the application package because it leaves marks on the photo. The scholarship winner’s name and photograph will be used for public relations purposes.
VII. SCHOLARSHIP DISBURSEMENT
Successful candidates will be expected to make their best effort to attend the Scholarship Award Luncheon currently scheduled for 11:30 on Tuesday, August 8th at the Mays Landing Country Club in Hamilton Township. Scholars should come prepared to make a brief (1-2 minute) introduction/statement about themselves.
