Research Guide for Science Topics

The KeanUniversity Library provides access to many electronic research tools, including the KeanCatalog (to search for books) andDatabases (to search for periodicalarticles, many available through the library’s full-text e-journals). Reference Collection

Subject encyclopedias in the library’s Reference Collection are good sources of background information on topics within specific subject areas. These Reference books are full of topic ideas, as well as ideas for narrowing topics. The following titles are examples of subject encyclopedias and other reference books:

Reference books are located on the first floor of the library, while books from the Main Collection are located on the second and third floors. All books are shelved in alphanumeric order by call number. Reference books may not be checked out of the library. Books from the Main Collection may be checked out at the Circulation Desk by presenting a valid Kean Photo ID Card with Library Barcode. Search in the online Kean Catalog (go to then click Books, E-books, Videos & More) to find the call numbers for books of interest.

Research Databases

The library’s research databases provide access to articles published in magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals. Several online reference databases are available, as well. Go to then click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists, one listing databases alphabetically and the other listing databases by subject or format. Listed below are some of the databases that are available to you from any computer on campus:

Wiley InterScience Journals

Wiley InterScience is a database that provides access to full-text science, technology, and medical journals. To access Wiley InterSciencefrom the library’sArticles & More (Databases) page:

●Click the letter W on the Jump to menu.

● Click Wiley InterScience Journals.

● Click a specific journal title from the list, or type search terms in the search box on the right-hand side of the screen. For instance, type global warming and health

● Click Go.

●Click Full Text: PDF for a document in the search results list to view the full-text article.

EBSCOhost Research Databases

EBSCOhost is an online platform that provides access to a number of different databases, many focusing on a particular subject area or type of article. Many of these databases provide access to full-text journal and magazine articles. To access the EBSCOhost Research Databases from the library’sArticles & More (Databases) page:

●Click the letter E on the Jump to menu.

● Click EBSCOhost Research Databases (EBSCOhost).

● Click EBSCOhost Web.

● Select a database or databases from the list of databases provided. For instance, selectAcademic Search Premier, Biological Abstracts,and/orMasterFile Premier, then click Continue.

●Type your key terms in the search box labeledFind:.Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, type:

greenhouse and aerosol*

●Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selectingScholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals under the Limit your results heading.

● Click Search.

●Click HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text (if available for a document in the search results list) to view the full-text article.

●E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clickingE-mail located at the top of your screen.

OmniFile Full Text Mega

OmniFileis a multidisciplinary database that provides access to full-text articles in a number of subject areas, including general science, applied science andtechnology, and biological andagricultural sciences. To access OmniFilefrom the library’sArticles & More (Databases) page:

● Click the letter O on the Jump to menu.

● Click OmniFile Full Text Mega (WilsonWeb).

● Limit your search to a specific subject area by selecting General Science, Applied Science & Technology, orBiological & Agricultural from the Subject Area drop-down menu.

● Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third boxes adjacent to Search For:. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use theasterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For example, try typing: solid waste and landfill*

● Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles)by selectingPeer Reviewedunder the Limit to section.

● Click Start.

●Click Full TextHTMLorFull TextPDF(if available immediately below a record in the search results list) to view the full-text article.

●E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking the blue Print Email Save button located on the left-hand side of your screen.

Encyclopedia of Life Sciences

Encyclopedia of Life Sciencesis an online reference resource that serves as a subject encyclopedia for the biological sciences. The database provides access to more than 3,500 encyclopedia articles. To access the Encyclopedia of Life Sciencesfrom the library’sArticles & More (Databases) page:

●Click the letter E on the Jump to menu.

●Click Encyclopedia of Life Sciences (Wiley).

●Type search terms (such as, global warming) in the box labeledQuick Search, then click Go.

● Click the title for any document in the search results list toview the full-text article.

● Click Download PDF in the blue box on the left to access the full-text page image.

ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect provides full-text access to over 4 million scholarly articles published in science, technology, and medicine journals. To access ScienceDirectfrom the library’sArticles & More (Databases) page:

● Click the letter S on the Jump to menu.

● Click Science Direct (Elsevier).

●Click the Search button to access the Basic Search Template.

● Type your key terms in the first and second boxes underneath Term(s):. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the exclamation point (!)as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. Forexample, try typing the following terms in the search boxes,

First Search Box: refuse disposal

Second Search Box: incinerat!

● Click Search.

●Click either Full Text + Links or PDF(if available in the search results list) to view the full-text article.

● E-mail the full-text article you are viewing by clickingAbstract orFull Text + Links, then clickE-mail Article located in the green box on the right-hand side of your screen.

Science Online

Science Online provides extensive definitions,biographies, and articles for a variety of scientific disciplines. To accessScience Online from the library’s Articles & More (Databases) page:

●Click the letter S on the Jump to menu.

●Click Science Online (Facts on File).

● Scroll and select Science OnlineunderAdditional Databases.

●Type search terms in the search box on the left-hand side of the screen. For instance, type:greenhouse effect

●Click Search.

● Select one of the result categories listed under Search Summary. For instance, click 2 Experiments Found, then click Entry Title to access the full text for any relevant results.

●E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clickingEmail Page located at the top right-hand side of the screen.

CQ Electronic Library

CQ Electronic Library provides access to full-text reports from the CQPublic Affairs Collection, the CQ Researcher Online, and the CQ Supreme Court Collection. It provides comprehensive coverage of political and social issues, including reports on topics relating to education, the environment, technology, health, international affairs, and the U.S. economy. To access CQ Electronic Libraryfrom the library’s Articles & More (Databases) page:

Click the letter C on the Jump to menu.

 Click CQ Electronic Library (Congressional Quarterly).

 Enter search terms – such as global warming – in the Quick Search box.

 Click titles in the results list to access full-text reports.
