Gateways CCBLA AmeriCorps Member Service Description

TITLE: Gateways Academic Mentor Coordinator (AmeriCorps)

HOURS OF SERVICE: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., M – F with some evening and weekend hours

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Center for Community-Based Learning and Action connects students as volunteers with community-based organizations for community benefit and to apply their learning in practical ways. As an AmeriCorps member, you will work closely with Evergreen Academic programs. The Gateways Academic Program brings Evergreen Students to two juvenile detention facilities to learn side-by-side with incarcerated youth and provide these youth with preparation and access to a college education. The Academic Mentor program recruits, orients and supports Evergreen students as mentors to work one-on-one and in groups with college bound high school students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATED TASKS:

·  Conduct on-campus outreach to students to increase involvement as mentors and tutors in the Gateways programs. Work with Gateways academic program to support mentoring.

·  Develop flyers, press releases, and other media to publicize these volunteer opportunities.

·  Coordinate with the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action VISTA and YIS AmeriCorps to identify opportunities for volunteers not appropriate for Gateways.

·  Recruit tutors with specific skills for the Gateways Program.

·  Follow up with youth who have left the Gateways Program to encourage their continued participation in education.

·  Follow up with youth who have participated in the Gateways Program to determine the effect of the program on their current involvement in work and education.

·  Provide training on “how to be a mentor/tutor” to college students prior to their placements.

·  Maintain documentation of data as required by the programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·  BA/BS required.

·  Ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds.

·  Good organization, problem-solving and written and oral communication skills.

·  Basic office computer skills, including word processing required. Experience with spreadsheets/databases and desktop publishing preferred.

·  Enthusiasm and self-direction.
