GarrardCounty schools apparently began playing basketball in the mid-1930s.At that time, each school had a gymnasium built by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) during the Great Depression. It is possible that basketball was played by the county schools prior to that gym construction, but there is no record of such. And there are records for football.
There were originally five segregated high schools in the county: Buckeye, Camp Dick Robinson, Lancaster, Paint Lick and Buena Vista (which would merge with Camp Dick Robinson in the fall of 1946). There were several "black" schools in the county but only one included a high school – Mason – which was located in Lancaster. Mason would become part of GarrardCountyHigh Schoolwhen the consolidation opened in the fall of 1964.
The GarrardCounty schools were in the 45th District with the Danville/Boyle County schools for their entire existence.LancasterHigh School had won district championships in 1942, 1945 and 1957.While no other county school won a district title, all but Mason made at least one appearance in the 12th Region tournament. None of the GarrardCounty schools ever claimed a region championship. In 1957 Lancasterbecame the only pre-consolidation school to win a region tournament game.
