GANG AND PREVENTION COORDINATOR (480111)
Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to coordinate gang prevention and intervention initiatives that directly affect at-risk youth, young adults and any other people group susceptible to gang related activity.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Implement the Comprehensive Gang Model in Fulton County endorsed by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Introduce the Comprehensive Gang Model to a task force that will include law enforcement, city and county officials, school administrators, community and religious leaders. Meet quarterly to identify concerns and opportunities for greater effectiveness and engagement.
Lead and coordinate gang and violence prevention initiatives that target youth and young adults. Communicate with Gang Prevention and Intervention Coordinators around the country to assess what programs are currently successful. Work with the Fulton County District Attorney’s office to implement programs that coincide with education in the criminal justice system.
Assist in launching a county-wide initiative similar to the Boston Gun Project and Operation Cease Fire that uses a problem-solving approach, a broad coalition of Federal, State and local government agencies, nonprofit community service organizations, businesses, religious leaders, parents and resident stakeholders to develop programs to address the escalating number of gang-related homicides. Meet with the aforementioned agencies to formulate and implement the project.
Organize local religious leaders and faith-based organizations to work with former gang members to develop effective strategies to prevent at-risk youth from joining gangs. Identify former gang members. Identify religious leaders with a passion for working with at-risk youth. Hold meetings to discuss solutions to gang violence and involvement.
A clear understanding of the gang problem and the Comprehensive Gang Model. Social work experience working with culturally diverse communities. Ability to understand community-based programming and influential leadership to bring multiple bodies together for a common purpose. Develop a county and regional gang task force for the purposes of information gathering and sharing. Contact and meet with coordinators across the southeast. Research and collect information on best practices to share with law enforcement across Fulton County.
Work directly with schools, community clubs, and grassroots organizations to provide education on gang related trends that will assist in the proactivity of preventing youth gang activity. Speak to school administrators and schedule trainings for school teachers and staff on gang trends among their student population. Create and implement after-school programs or specialized activities at local community centers for at-risk youth.
Work with legislators to analyze the effectiveness of gang-related laws, policies and regulation. Review current laws and
recommend new legislation based on emerging gang trends. Meet at least once per year with legislators and policy advisors.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree required; (Behavioral Science, Social Work, Criminal Justice or related field of studies are preferred) or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Requires knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws; policies and procedures governing Fulton County Superior Court, and methods and techniques related to area of assignment.

Other Requirements:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
