Sermon Notes 7.9.17

Galatians 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Mark 3:4-6 4Then Jesus asked them,“Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”But they remained silent.

5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man,“Stretch out your hand.”He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodianshow they might kill Jesus.

1 Corinthians 13:4-64Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,it is not easily angered,it keeps no record of wrongs.6Love does not delight in evilbut rejoices with the truth.

Ephesians 4:26-27 “In your anger do not sin”:Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,27and do not give the devil a foothold.

Ephesians 4:30-32 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,with whom you were sealedfor the day of redemption.31Get rid ofall bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Colossians 3:7-9 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.8But now you must also rid yourselvesof all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old selfwith its practices

  • Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answerturnsawaywrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Colossians 3:12-17 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselveswith compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.13Bear with each otherand forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15Let the peace of Christrule in your hearts, since as members of one bodyyou were called to peace. And be thankful.16Let the message of Christdwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdomthrough psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.17And whatever you do,whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanksto God the Father through him.

Matthew 24:9-14 “Then you will be handed over to be persecutedand put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,11and many false prophetswill appear and deceive many people.12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,13but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.14And this gospel of the kingdomwill be preached in the whole worldas a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

2 Timothy 4:2-5 (AMP)2preach the word [as an official messenger]; be ready when the time is right andevenwhen it is not [keep your sense of urgency, whether the opportunity seems favorable or unfavorable, whether convenient or inconvenient, whether welcome or unwelcome]; correct [those who err in doctrine or behavior], warn [those who sin], exhortandencourage [those who are growing toward spiritual maturity], with inexhaustible patience and [faithful] teaching.3For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrineandaccurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; butwantingto have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desiresandto support the errors they hold,4and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into mythsandman-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable].5But as for you, be clear-headed in every situation [stay calm and cool and steady], endure every hardship [without flinching], do the work of an evangelist, fulfill [the duties of] your ministry.

The Sounds of Silence

Am G

Hello darkness, my old friend,

Am

I've come to talk with you again,

F C

Because a vision softly creeping,

F C

Left its seeds while I was sleeping,

F C

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Am

Still remains

F Am

Within the sound of silence.

V2

Am G

In restless dreams I walked alone

Am

Narrow streets of cobblestone,

Am F C

'Neath the halo of a street lamp,

F C

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

F C

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

Am

That split the night

G Am

And touched the sound of silence.

V3

Am G

And in the naked light I saw

Am

Ten thousand people, maybe more.

Am F C

People talking without speaking,

F C

People hearing without listening,

F C

People writing songs that voices never share

Am

And no one dare

G Am

Disturb the sound of silence.

V4

Am G

Fools said I, you do not know

Am

Silence like a cancer grows.

Am F C

Hear my words that I might teach you,

F C

Take my arms that I might reach you.

F C

But my words like silent raindrops fell,

Am

And echoed

G Am

In the wells of silence

V5

Am G

And the people bowed and prayed

Am

To the neon God they made.

Am F C

And the sign flashed out its warning,

F C

In the words that it was forming.

F

And the sign said, the words of the prophets

F C

Are written on the subway walls

Am G Am

And tenement halls. And whispered in the sounds of silence.
