Unit # 3 writing and discussion assignments

The 2nd unit essay assignment is to prepare a descriptive essay. You may write on one of two topics – 1) some specific aspect of globalization or 2) what is a community?

There are a number of ways you might approach the task of this descriptive essay. In the case of the first topic area, you might describe an aspect or feature of globalization as presented in the first two parts of Friedman’s book. For example, he introduces a number of terms or phrases to describe particular aspects or phenomena of globalization – you might pick-up his lead and describe one of those in your own words. Another approach would be to describe: a) an event or process that has created the globalization phenomena, b) how globalization appears and manifests its presence in your contemporary world, or c) an effect and consequence of globalization on others. In the case of the second topic area, you might take an approach using an example of one or more of the communities of which you are a part. Or you might define and describe a community in terms of particular values and/or relationships. In either case, the readers of your essay should have through your description a concrete (solid) sense of what you are describing.
