Future Dragons’ Den Application Pack

Sustainable Communities - 2014

This form is for individuals, groups and businesses submitting ideas for the Future Dragons’ Den sustainable communities challenge as part of Hay on Earth 2014.

Green Dragons’ Den was started by TYF’s Andy Middleton & Hay Festival’s Andy Fryers and is part of Hay on Earth at the Hay Festival. Now in its fifth year and renamed, Future Dragons, the challenge has seen over £140,000 in grant funding given to help establish projects and ideas that tackle the sustainability agenda. Over 3000 people have been involved in the Hay on Earth Dragon Series to date with 2014 building on the success of previous events.

This year there are three separate categories held over three days:

Tuesday 27th May 2014

Sustainable Communities - This year’s competition supports and complements the aims of the Future Generations Bill focusing on how small communities and neighbourhoods can plan and build for long-term resilience. Shortlisted projects will pitch their ideas with the chance of one project to win grant funding of up to £10,000 from the Welsh Government to scale up and deliver their work.

Wednesday 28thand Thursday 29th May 2014

Social Entrepreneurs with a great idea for social change will have the opportunity to compete to gain up to £15,000 in funding from UnLtd for their project:

Wednesday 28th, Do It Award up to £5000 to start up your venture.

Thursday 29th Build It Award up to £15,000 for scaling up your venture.

On each day the shortlisted projects will have the opportunity to be challenged by both the public and the Dragons before taking part in the Future Dragons’ Den – facing four Dragons and having three minutes to tell a story that will capture the Dragon's hearts, minds and cheque books.

Please note that this form is for the sustainable Communities day on the 27th May only.

  • Supports and complements the aims of the Future Generations Bill
  • Link projects, organisations and solutions in more effective ways
  • Make inspired use of seed funding
  • Inspire and affect behaviour change

All projects must show how they will measure the benefits of their work, and commit to sharing their learning and any tools developed freely and openly with other organisations. The funding should drive new ways of doing things, and we welcome combined projects that bring together organisations from different places and sectors.

The small print

Entry is restricted to applications from projects in Wales that are not already funded by Welsh Government.

If you are successful, your grant funding will form a contract between your business, charity or community organisation and Hay Festival. Your success at the Dragons’ Den event is your application to the grant scheme, and is not a guarantee of the funds. We will need a completed business plan in order to confirm the level of grant funds available. Grant funding is normally payable in arrears, unless you can demonstrate the need for advance payment.

Grant funding can be reclaimed in certain circumstances, such as:

Spending the funds on other than the approved project plan
