To the Teacher
The charts on the following pages provide two options, with unit-by-unit recommendations, for what to teach in each class of a 48-hour course and what to assign for homework. Each unit will take you about four hours of class time (approximately 60 minutes per lesson). Note that the chart assumes that your class meets for two hours each time. You may need to change the way the material is divided if your class has a different schedule.
Option 1 (Listening and Speaking emphasis)
The chart for this option begins on page 3. In general, we recommend the following:
In class
· Teach all Listening and Speaking lessons and all Grammar lessons within each unit.
· Teach some of the Life Skills and Reading lessons. For recommendations on which lessons to teach within each unit, refer to the chart. You may at your discretion select different Life Skills and Reading lessons to cover in class, depending on the needs and interests of your students.
Homework
· Assign all Life Skills lessons that you did not cover in class.
· If a Grammar lesson is preceded by a Reading lesson that you are not planning to cover in class, assign that Reading lesson for homework before teaching the Grammar lesson in class.
· In the Review and Expand: Show What You Know lesson, assign 1 Review.
· Optionally, assign all Reading lessons and the Writing lesson.
· Optionally, assign all lessons of the Practice Plus CD-ROM and all lessons of the Workbook as homework so students get daily practice.
Option 2 (Reading and Writing emphasis)
The chart for this option begins on page 9. In general, we recommend the following:
In class
· Teach most Reading lessons and the Writing lesson within each unit.
· Teach some of the Life Skills lessons. For recommendations on which lessons to teach within each unit, refer to the chart. You may at your discretion select different Life Skills and Reading lessons to cover in class, depending on the needs and interests of your students.
Homework
· Assign all Life Skills lessons that you did not cover in class.
· Assign all Grammar lessons. Also assign any lesson that precedes the Grammar lesson, if it was not covered in class.
· In the Review and Expand: Show What You Know lesson, assign 1 Review.
· Optionally, assign the Listening and Grammar lessons.
· Optionally, assign all lessons of the Practice Plus CD-ROM and all lessons of the Workbook as homework so students get daily practice.
