Utilities
Most apartment complexes will remind you, but don’t forget to turn on your utilities before you move to your new home. The best thing is to have your water and electricity set up the day before you plan to arrive. Then call and schedule for cable, internet and phone to be installed on the day you arrive or soon after. It is best to ask the leasing office or the owner of the home what you will need to install.

Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) & Licenses
All new residents of North Carolina who plan to operate a motor vehicle in this state must obtain a driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence. To apply, you must appear in person at one of the state’s driver license offices and take the required tests. New residents are encouraged to become familiar with North Carolina license requirements and traffic laws by reading the N.C. Driver’s Handbook. US Citizens must successfully complete the written, road sign recognition and vision tests to obtain a North Carolina driver license (Internationals will also need to take a road test). There can be a lot of waiting around at the DMV so it is advisable to get there as early as possible to get ahead of the crowd.
Make sure you study for the test as it can be tricky! Be sure to bring cash or check for your relevant license fee. In addition to the handbook, here is a CHEAT SHEET and a PRACTICE TEST that we’ve found very helpful in ourpreparations.
