The project is a comic anthology for Warwick students who write and draw comics to be collected, published and distributed throughout societies and on campus. I have collected content from a range of people, partly through people I know who write and draw comics, and partly by reaching out to societies, which range from simple two-panel gags to a five-page science fiction story. The comic will be called Attic and, as it stands, is a collection of eight stories over twenty four pages. The cover will be in colour and the inside in black and white, and it will be at the conventional comic book size, somewhere in between A4 and A5. Part of the need for it is that there are plenty of talented and funny comic creators who don’t showcase their work in any way, and part of it is to balance the useful but extremely earnest careers publications on campus. There is currently no humour or satire publication at Warwick University, and if the first issue of Attic is well received it would ideally find a way of becoming self-sustaining and could take on this role. Comics as a medium are particularly suited to this in that they are very immediate, universally understandable, and easy to read, so my hope is that even people who would not otherwise be interested will find the comic accessible and relevant to their lives. To print three hundred issues will cost two hundred and ninety pounds, and I would like to do this within the next week and a half because some of the content is relevant to exams and people start to head off fairly soon.
As I said, ideally the comic will become self-sustaining through advertising or some other fund, but it is critical that an issue comes out as soon as possible in order to establish the publication, make other potential contributors aware of it and entertain students in the coming weeks. The content is largely complete, I’m waiting on one story, and I have been in contact with printers, so all the project needs is funding. It will be distributed through societies (comedy, literature and comic book for example) and across campus. I would be happy to come in to speak to you about the project and show you some of the content, which is not only of a pretty great standard, but that reflects concerns and feelings that are unaddressed by Warwick University’s other publications with humour and intelligence.
