Fundamentals of Math – Mrs. Donna Campbell

Welcome to Fundamentals of Math! I am very much looking forward to our working together to make this a successful and rewarding year!

In this course we will review many math concepts with which you are already familiar, and get you more comfortable with math in general. The name says it all: FUN (I have some ideas to make math both fun and meaningful to you) and MENTAL (we will be improving upon our “number sense” by doing much of the work in our heads- that is, without calculator! We will work our way up to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Algebra I to better prepare you to take Algebra I and its SOL test next year. Other topics, beyond the scope of the SOL’s, will also be studied in preparation for subsequent mathematics courses and the SAT. Success in Algebra will enable the student to go on to other mathematics courses needed for higher education. The choice to work hard now will pay off with a greater number of options down the road, whether the goal is college or technical training, and a greater number of choices among many promising careers in the not too distant future. A good mathematical background is needed today for the best positions in nearly every field.

Tips for success:

Materials Needed: 3-ring binder, notebook paper, anda pencil (use a #2 pencil for all work). On most days I will hand out notes, so please keep them in your binder. When a calculator is needed, I will have some for you to borrow- no need to buy your own.

Notes: notebook checks will occur at random and will constitute a quiz grade.

  • Write in a clear and legible manner
  • Record the date and objectives for the day.
  • Record all steps used in solving each example.

Homework: The number of points will vary, depending on the difficulty of the assignment. Your practice each night is KEY to your success in this class!

  • Be sure to record homework assignments each day before leaving class, or check my website (link provided from SchoolSpace and/or HCPSLINK).
  • Review examples from the notes, textbook and/or web site.
  • Copy the assigned problem and show all work.Credit will not be given if you show only the answers.
  • Complete all homework assignments on time. Assignments which are late will receive NO credit.

Tests: usually 100 points

Tests will cover one chapter or less and will be announced in time for ample preparation. Try to avoid being absent the day before a test, as we will be reviewing for the test.

Test Tips:

  • Prepare early, reviewing notes, problems on quizzes and homework.
  • Be aware of the time, begin with the problems you know best.
  • Show ALL work and Check your work!

Quizzes:typically between 20 and 50 points

Quizzes will be scheduled and announced; notebook checks will be random.

Make-Up Work: In case of an absence, it is your responsibility to obtain specific assignments and class notes. You are expected to remain on schedule and be prepared for any announced quizzes or tests. Have the name and phone number of a class buddy that you can contact, if necessary. You may borrow and copy the notes from the day you are absent, or better yet, check my website where I post notes DAILY!

Extra Help: I will be available almost any day before or after school, but there are days where I must attend meetings. Be aware that you may not be the only one needing help; do not wait until the last minute for help! Other possible times: 4-D, 5th, 7th , or speak with me to schedule an appointment for extra help.

Parents AND Students: If you will please email meby Friday, Sept 20 (NO EXCEPTIONS), I will give your student 5 bonus points on a quiz grade to start off the year!! It must beyour e-mail account; if there is anything else you wish for me to be aware of, please include that, as well as the easiest way to contact you (phone numbers are appreciated).

Let’s get things off to a great start, Rebels!
