Fundamental League Rules

1.  Players are expected to be at the fundamental session prior to their games. Basketballs will be provided and no basketballs are to be removed from the gym for any reason. 28.5” balls will be used for all grades.

2.  All players play in all quarters. If a team is short players, the teams can play 4 on 4 or the director can select a player from another team to fill in.

3.  Each player will shoot one free throw at the beginning AND end of each game. The made free throws will count towards the teams score. Each team to shoot the same amount of free throws. (If you have 7 players and the other team has 8, one of your players gets to shoot twice) Free throw distance: 1st/2nd grade – 10’, 3rd/4th grade – 12’, 5th/6th grade – regulation

4.  Each session will begin with a fundamental practice session lead by team coaches or league directors. The following will be in place for each age group:

  1. 1st/2nd – 30 minute fundamentals, four 6 minute quarters with a 3 minute halftime
  2. 3rd/4th – 30 minute fundamentals, four 8 minute quarters with a 5 minute halftime
  3. 5th/6th – 30 minute fundamentals, four 8 minute quarters with a 5 minute halftime
  4. Substitutions for all will be half way through each quarter-no exceptions

5.  If a team is leading by 15 points, no additional points will be added unless the trailing team scores. 15 points is the most a team can lead by.

6.  We will emphasize sportsmanship team play. Basketball ethics & common sense are expected.

7.  Defense is as follows for each age group:

  1. 1st/2nd will play a 2-2 zone INSIDE the three point line only. They CANNOT steal the ball, but they CAN intercept a pass.
  2. 3rd/4th will play man to man at half court. They CAN steal the ball and intercept passes.
  3. 5th/6th can play man to man at half court. They CAN steal the ball and intercept passes.

8.  NO TRAPPING ON DEFENSE. Teams are to play man to man only.

9.  Only shooting fouls will be shot for grades 5/6. Grades 3/4 will take the ball out of bounds after a foul. While practicing before the game, show your team how to line up to ensure no time is wasted during the game. Clock stoppage for injuries only

10.  Basket height is as follows: 1st/2nd – 8.6’, 3rd/4th – 9’, 5th/6th – 10’

11.  Team results will be recorded for session ending tournament that will take place during the last week. (3rd through 6th grade only)

12.  Officiating will be as follows:

  1. 1st/2nd – coaches will be on the court to coach as well as referee the games. Call violations on your team only and make sure to keep your players under control.
  2. 3rd/4th – there will be scheduled adult referees
  3. 5th/6th – there will be scheduled registered referees

13.  1st/2nd will play 4 on 4 to encourage more touches of the ball as well as less confusion on the court. If more than eight players on your team, rotate accordingly.

14.  If tied at the end of play, alternating free throws will be shot to determine winner.
