This program, funded by the California state Basic Skills Initiative, is specifically designed for graduate students in English, reading, ESL, and math and are interested in a hands-on experience working withbasic skills students at the community college with a future career goal of becoming a community college instructor. According to the Basic Skills Initiative,Basic Skills as a Foundation for Student Success in California Community Colleges, “Basic skills are those foundational skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and English as Second Language, as well as learning skills and study skills which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work” [13]. The Basic Skills Graduate Student Mentorship Program provides the opportunity for graduate students to familiarize themselves with the community college student population and learn about basic skills course design and pedagogy. The graduate student mentee’s presence in the classroom also provides additional support for students to be successful.

As a graduate student mentee, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Attend weekly class meetings for 16 weeks
  • Spend 15 hours per semester tutoring basic skills students outside of class
  • Meet with faculty weekly for a total of 8 hours throughout the semesterto learn the overall structure of the basic skills course, assignments and learning objectives, student learning outcomes and assessment strategies,specific teaching methods, and interview and resume assistance, etc.
  • Attend onetwo-hour orientation and three two-hourtraining sessions [all to be held on Fridays from 10:00am-12:00pm]
  • Attend at least oneFullertonCollege campus basic skills workshops given during the semester [dates and times are TBD]
  • Complete at least one professional reading for further discussion and review
  • Present one basic skills lesson in the classroom [time and content to be arranged with the faculty mentor]
  • Prepare and presenttwo basic skills student workshops [to take place at Fullerton College]
  • Assist faculty with small group instruction, and may provide written feedback on student work [to be determined by the faculty mentor]
  • Keep a semester-long record of all of the duties and responsibilities assigned and completed.
  • Keep a semester-long tutoring record
  • Submit an end-of-the-semester evaluationsurvey concerning the overall effectiveness of the Basic Skills Graduate Student Mentorship Program.

Interns will be paid at a rate of $14/hr (up to $1700 total for the semester) for completing the above described program components during the semester. Please note that as a paid internship, the Graduate Student Mentorship cannot be used for credit in an academic course.
