General Information

Belfast Royal Academy was founded in 1785 and is the oldest school in the city. Originally situated near St. Anne’s Cathedral in what is now Academy Street, it was transferred to the Cliftonville Road in 1880, when the present building was erected. For more than a century the school was named The Belfast Academy. In 1888 Queen Victoria granted permission for the school to style itself the Belfast Royal Academy.

Belfast Royal Academy is a voluntary grammar school of some 1400 pupils, with a further 160 pupils in the preparatory department. Its management is vested in a Board of Governors on which parents and teachers are represented, along with Governors elected by Members of the Academy and nominees of the Minister of Education.

Three members of staff, including the Subject Leader, share in the teaching of ICT throughout the school. In addition, members of the Department contribute to the delivery of Computer Science and Software Systems Development at KS4 and A-level respectively.

Key Stage 3 pupils are allocated 1 period of ICT per fortnight increasing to 3 periods per fortnight in Form 3. At GCSE, pupils follow the CCEA specification for ICT/Digital Technology and OCR specification in Computer Science.

At AS/A2 the CCEA specification is followed for AS/A2 Digital Technology and AS/A2 Software Systems Development.

A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school is essential.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary of the main aspects of the role:

•To teach Digital Technology and Computer Science at KS3 and GCSE levels, and Digital Technology and Software System Development at AS/A2.

•To carry out the role of Class Tutor.

•To maintain good levels of discipline.

•To work with other members of the Computing/Digital Technology department to develop the schemes of work and to ensure that the curriculum is met.

•To carry out such administrative and such other tasks within the ICT/Computing department as are considered appropriate by the Subject Leader or the Principal.

•To contribute to the extra-curricular life of the School.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

Essential criteria

1.1A 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree in Computing/Computer Science/ICT or a related ICT subject.

1.2Recognition as a qualified teacher by the General Teaching Council (NI) or an equivalent qualification pending as part of a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.

1.3.One year’s experience teaching Computer Science/Software Systems Development to Advanced Level.

1.4.Evidence of a high standard in oral and written communication.

1.5Evidence of ability to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.

1.6Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to cope effectively with the demands of the post.

Desirable criteria

2.1A 1st Class Honours Degree in Computing/Computer Science/ICT or a related ICT subject.

2.2One year’s experience teaching Digital Technology to Advanced Level.

2.3Experience using innovative technology to promote effective teaching and learning.
