Dear Reverend Murray

FOLLOW-UP TO THE GENERAL INSPECTION OF MONEYDARRAGH PRIMARY SCHOOL

The general inspection in February 1999 highlighted strengths in the climate of review and development among its committed and conscientious staff, the children’s good attitudes to learning, and the developing provision for children with special educational needs. It identified the need for improvement in the following key areas:

  • the breadth and progression in reading and writing;
  • the co-ordination and coherence of the children’s learning experiences where these were provided by more than one teacher;
  • the limited accommodation.

Two new teachers have been appointed to the school since the inspection.

The Education and Training Inspectorate carried out on follow-up inspection on 26 May 2000. The following are the most important improvements which have been implemented since the general inspection:

  • the teachers have introduced systematic approaches and procedures to support development in the children’s strategies for reading; reading materials are being expanded, and the school is working to promote positive attitudes towards reading.
  • There is evidence of a range of good writing in each class; the collection of samples of writing helps the teachers to monitor the variety and purposes of the children’s writing, and contributes to their shared understanding of standards. The teachers are successfully identifying opportunities for personal writing across the curriculum, and are encouraging the children to refine their writing towards a final version.
  • Good developments in structured play are supporting the younger children’s oral development.
  • The deployment of teachers now provides satisfactory class sizes and greater continuity in the children’s learning.
  • It is expected that a temporary building suitable for dining and physical education will be in place next year.

The school has made good progress in addressing the key areas for action. The parents and the broader community can have confidence in the school’s commitment to improvement.

Yours sincerely

MARION J MATCHETT (MISS)

Chief Inspector
