Submissions/answers/views - Violations of Human Rights to Water and Sanitation

1.The rights to water in Sri Lanka have been violated

Causing all water bodies particularly and mostly in agricultural areas, polluted with agrochemicals.

Over the last several years more than 50000 have died of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) caused by agro chemicals.

More than 200000 have been identified as affected and are in different stages of this fatal CKD

First identified in predominantly agricultural area in the country, presently is being identified in other areas well.

It is not only Right to water, but also Right to life and Right to Lively hood of the peasants – farmers are also violated.

2. In 2006 Dr. Sarath Bandara, Professor agricultural faculty, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka disclosing research results

Has stated the major cause of the unusual increase of chronic kidney disease is the agrochemicals used in agriculture over the

Period of more than thirty years. Several others and the general public are also of the view that the cause of the CKD and most other

Non Communicable Diseases is none other than the agro chemicals,

In this regard it should be noted that immediately after the disclosure of Professor Sarath Bandara, the Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka

In collaboration with the World Health Organization refuted the finding that the cause of CKD is agro chemicals and stating that

the exact cause has not yet been identified affixed the letter U to CKD to say unidentified aetiology, and gave huge publicity for it.

Thus the multi billion Agro chemical Industry was saved.

Sri Lanka which had never used agro chemicals in its more than three thousand years history was compelled to use agro chemicals

By the Food and Agricultural Organization through the government of Sri Lanka.

Therefore the UN FAO is mainly accountable for the violation of Right to water and sanitation in Sri Lanka .

Swarna Hansa Foundation has already made a complaint to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka on last Human Rights Day.

In the Complain we have stated how the FAO knowing very well the imminent danger of agro chemicals, and performing

the job of a sales representative for the US Agro Chemical Companies enforced the use of these highly lethal product through

the Government .It reveals the understanding and the power relationships among Business Conglomerates UNAgencies and

country theGovernments,
