About Breitling Elementary School

Frank Wilmoth Breitling was born in Marengo County on July 31, 1898. As a young man, he dreamed of entering the Naval Academy. The loss of an arm during his high school years forced him to focus on other goals. Fortunately, he turned his sights to education. As a young man of nineteen, Mr. Breitling served as teacher/principal at a two teacher school at Santuck, Alabama. His salary was $75.00 a month. Moving to Flomaton as a principal changed his life. Miss Goldie Farris was a student at his school. They married in 1921.

The Breitlings moved to Mobile County in 1921. For the next fifteen years, Mr. Breitling served as principal of Theodore School, administrator of the Pre-Vocational School in Mobile, and a social studies teacher at Murphy High School. During the summers, Mr. Breitling attended the University of Alabama and Peabody College. He received his B.S. from Peabody in 1929.

Mr. Breitling served as principal of Mobile County High School in Grand Bay for the next thirty years. During his tenure, the enrollment grew from 340 to 1,115. In 1961, Mr. Breitling and other community members constructed the first portable classroom in Mobile County. All labor was donated. Under his leadership, a football field was constructed and lighted. Vocational, commercial and music programs were added. Two building/addition projects were completed.

The 1966 Mobile County High School Yearbook was dedicated to Mr. Breitling. The faculty expressed their love and admiration with the following: “Frank W. Breitling—a man of this century; a man with an ever-young, vibrant heart; a man with a true sense of values; a man with a dedicated purpose; a man sensitive to all the needs of all his school and community, a man of vision and deep spiritual insight; a man whom we salute.”

The staff at Breitling Elementary is proud to have a school in our community that bears the name of such a man.

Parents of students may escort their child to class the first day of school. These parents should park in the north parking lot. After the first day, all parents and visitors must enter through the front door and check in at the office. Faculty and staff will be available to walk your child to class. Faculty and staff members will be stationed around the school (inside and outside) to assist as needed. Everyone must adhere to these procedures.

STUDENTS MAY NOT BE DROPPED OFF AT THE FRONT ENTRANCE. The doors are locked at 7:30. There is a clock at the carpool area that is set to school time. DO NOT drop your child off if the clock time is past 7:30 as they will not be able to get into the building.

  • Only the inside lane will be used for unloading in the morning. Remember, there is an entry door at each end. Make sure you pull all the way forward if the lane is clear.
  • STAY IN YOUR CAR - School staff will be available to assist students as needed. Make sure your child is ready to unload when you arrive at school.
  • Load and unload between the yellow lines only.
  • Do not park in designated handicap spaces unless your child is disabled.
  • Do not use the carpool lanes for parking at any time.

ATTENDANCE

Opening of School - The first day of school for students is August 10, 2016. Take-in is at 7:30.Attending school is VITAL! We are held accountable when your child does not attend. Phone calls will be made daily to the homes of students who are absent.

State law requires a written excuse for each absence. When your child returns to school, send a written note to the teacher stating the reason for the absence. The note must be sent within three (3) days of the student’s return. Absences not excused within three (3) days will be marked unexcused. Students may not be allowed to make-up work if their absence is unexcused. Check with your child to see that the excuse was given to the teacher. It is up to the parent or student to see that notes are turned in. This applies even if your child has a chronic illness letter. Written notes from parents will excuse eight (8) days. Whenever a child is taken to a doctor, be sure to send the doctor’s excuse to school. Failure to adhere to the law may result in referral to the courts for the Early Warning Truancy Program. Parents are asked to make dental, medical, and other appointments for their children after school hours. If you check a child out before 11:00 a.m. the student will be marked absent for the day. If your child is sent home by the nurse, you still need to send a note when the student returns.

REMEMBER - Students cannot learn if they are not in class.

Head Lice/Communicable Diseases - Children with lice or nits will be sent home and must clear with school personnel before returning to class. The student will be given up to three (3) days for excused absence due to head lice. Students will not be allowed to ride the bus until cleared by the school.

No early dismissals will be granted after 2:00 p.m. If your child has an appointment, sign them out before 2:00 p.m.

We will ask for picture identification when you arrive to get students for an early dismissal. This is for the safety of the children and not to inconvenience you. The person working the front desk may not know you.

We cannot change the way a child gets home without a parent note. We do not deliver messages or take change requests over the phone or fax. You may send the written request with the child to give to his teacher. These request must be approved by administration.

This is a regulation of the federally funded Child Nutrition Program. The school could be fined for violating this rule.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD)

We believe that students should be able to use technology as a learning tool. As a way to incorporate more technology into the curriculum, Breitling participates in the Bring Your Own Device program through the use of the MCPSS network. The school provides and requires a signed Acceptable Use Policy that includes guidelines for device management and consequences for violations. A new policy must be completed each year. This policy is kept on file and is required by all users.

BUSES Student Transportation phone # 221-5260

  1. Students should be on time at the bus stop. Wait until the bus stops before getting on the bus.
  2. Hands, arms, and head should be inside the bus at all times.
  3. Loud talking and laughing are not allowed.
  4. Horse playing is not permitted at the bus stop or on the bus.
  5. Never tamper with the bus. Breakage and damage caused by careless behavior will be considered willful acts of vandalism. Parents or guardians of offending pupils must pay for these damages before bus riding privileges can be restored.
  6. Do not throw anything out of the bus window.
  7. Do not leave your seat until the bus has stopped.
  8. Be very quiet when the bus approaches railroad crossings.
  9. Students should not engage in any activity that distracts the driver.
  10. The bus driver is the ultimate authority on his/her bus and must be obeyed.
  11. Students may only ride their assigned bus.

NOTE: RIDING THE BUS IS A PRIVILEGE. This privilege can be revoked if a student continuously causes disruption that interferes with the orderly and safe transportation of students.

Students must ride their assigned bus unless there is an emergency. Then they must bring a written note from their parent and have it approved by the office. Students are to ride the same bus both in the morning and afternoon. Any exceptions must be cleared through the Transportation Department of the Mobile County Public School System. Misbehaving will result in suspension from the bus and possibly from school. The safety of all students is our main concern. The bus driver must be obeyed at all times. If a student is suspended from the bus, it is the parent’s responsibility to see that their child arrives at school on time and is picked up on time in the afternoon. Suspension from the bus is not an excused absence.

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

Students should not damage or write on school items. Students will be required to clean up if they are caught littering, stuffing items down the toilets, or creating other problems. Students are expected to clean up their own mess, whether in the classroom, cafeteria, library, or any other location on campus or the bus. Chewing gum is not allowed. Students/parents or guardians will be expected to pay for deliberate destruction of school property. Cases of vandalism are also reported to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department.

DISCIPLINE

By Alabama law, parents are responsible for their child’s actions while the child is at school. No student has the right to interfere with another student’s right to learn. The administration and faculty will make and enforce rules to guarantee a good instructional program and learning environment for all students. Please call if a problem develops so we can work together to solve it. The Student Code of Conduct for the Mobile County Public Schools will be enforced at Breitling. It is the parent’s responsibility to review those policies and procedures. All discipline records are kept on computer and monitored by the Division of Student Services at the Central Office.
