Training grants for the "Junior Sportsmen and Women of the Year"

Promoting the "Junior Sportsmen and Women of the Year" is a central component of DPD's support for Sporthilfe. This year first prize in the individual category went to judoka Sappho Coban, who in2013 won Germany's first-ever junior world championship title in judo. Second place went to track cyclist Maximilian Dörnbach, with mountainbiker Lukas Baum taking third prize. In the team category theunder-21national hocky team came out on top. The special award in paralympic sports went to Anna-Lena Forster (Alpine skiing), while Linda Neumann (swimming) took the award for hearing-disabled sport.

All the sportswomen and sportsmen who received awards and nominations are provided by DPD with training grants to enable them to buy books or pay fees for their studies, for example.Since the year 2004 DPD has financed something like 300 training grants to a value of more than 600,000 euros. DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann explains: "The aim of our training grants is not just to provide support for tomorrow's model sportspeople, but also to help them combine their sporting and occupational careers."

As partner to Deutsche Sporthilfe DPD's commitment goes well beyond the "Junior Sportsmen and Women of the Year"competition. For example, with theSporthilfe fund-raising campaign "Dein Name für Deutschland" (Your Name for Germany) DPD is campaigning for greater support for Germany's up-and-coming and top sporting talents. In addition, as part of the "SprungbrettZukunft"(Springboard Future) initiative DPD is supporting parallel sporting and occupational careers with its so-called 'code-word application'process, which offers sportspeople theirown individual channel for making job applications, thus facilitating their access to work opportunities. In addition the Sporthilfe logo also appears on the over 8,000 delivery vehicles operated by DPD in Germany, ensuring that the logo is a familiar everyday sight on the country's roads.
