“Friendship is like a violin, the music may stop now and then, but the strings will last forever.” Ashley Upchurch

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE

It’s February and that means Valentine’s Day is approaching. The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.Sonnets were composed immortalizing amorous feelings.

By the late 1700’s, scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own were available. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called “mechanical Valentines,” and a reduction in postal rates in the next century encouraged the less personal but easier practice of mailing Valentines.

Looking back to our grade school years, we remember cutting out hearts, pasting them on lacey paper and distributing them in the classroom. And, remember the anxiety? Did that cute Bobby Kessler send us a Valentine this year?

It wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century that the practice of exchanging cards was extended to include gifts, typically roses and chocolates packed in red satin, heart-shaped boxes, and sometimes, jewelry.

In many countries, Valentine’s Day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones. It is common to see people do “acts of appreciation” for their friends, recognizing those “strings” that have been neglected.

So consider choosing a way to celebrate. We’re almost positive Macy’s is having a sale so purchasing a gift for a loved onewill be easy. Or, write a note to a few friends expressing your gratitude for their friendship. Or, offer to do something for a friend that might be helpful or enjoyable.

However, if you are an incurable romantic, then try singing “I just can’t make my eyes behave, my lips may say ‘run away from me,’ but my eyes say ‘come and play with me.’”It worked for Ziegfeld’s Anna Held, but when we tried it, our husbands asked if we had something caught in our eye. We wish you better luck.

We send our love to all of you in celebration of our friendships.

Some wild animals who have been injured and cannot be returned to the wild, and has naturalists and staff who provide educational opportunities in astronomy, science and research, the flora and fauna of the High Desert, and other related topics to living in this area. The purpose of the grant last year was to create an outdoor “Planet Walk” exhibit at the Observatory to provide a fun educational experience for the public to learn about our Solar System and understand the incredible distances and sizes associated with space. They were given $2,800.

February Luncheon – Left Brain, Right Brain [Insert picture of Barbara Largent]

The February 15, 2011 SRWC luncheon will feature Barbara Largent. Barbara Largent MD is a wife, mother, artist and healer who practices mind/body/energy medicine. She started out as a family practitioner, but through her own inner journey and working with abused children, she came to understand that there are many more ways of healing than just taking pills. She discovered the amazing healing power of engaging the right brain mode for herself and now uses this understanding in helping others. The brain has 2 distinct ways of interacting with and interpreting the world. Come explore for a bit during Barbara’s talk “Left Brain, Right Brain” and gain some understanding of your preferred brain mode and the powers that lie within.

Crosswater is the luncheon location and the menu is Cobb Salad with Chocolate Flourless Tart with Strawberry Sauce. Luncheon registration begins at 11:30 with lunch at noon. Price is $18.00. Please have checks ready and made payable to SRWC, or you may pay in cash or by VISA. The SRWC will now have a VISA machine available at all our luncheons and most events. Dear SRWC Ladies,

As you all may remember, last winterDinah Finney, Bonnie Sperbeck and Kathy Wrightsonput forth a challenge to our SRWC membership to design a bra for our Breast Cancer Awareness Program which was held in January 2010. We can'tthankeach of you enough who participatedin joiningthisfun task....some of you even designed 2!!!!! Since then, the bras were displayed at the Sunriver Library, in the St. Charles Cancer Center, including an interim appearance at Drake Park for the annual"Heaven Can Wait Walk", then back to St. Charles. The appreciative feedback from the Cancer Center staff was overwhelming. These fabulous 'pieces of art' also made their appearance at our first SRWC Art Faire last August. and at Hot Box Betty's in downtown Bend. It has been quite a journey for these 20+ "girls".

The next, and possibly final, appearance forour exciting 'designs' will be at the event that is described next.We are sharing these detailsas a courtesy for the event as this is not a promotion supported directly by SRWC. Your participation is merely a community involvement opportunity.

From Kathy, Bonnie and Dinah:

Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Riverhouse Convention Center. "Night Of Hope" is thetheme for a cancer fund-raising event whereall proceeds will to directly to the Cancer Navigator programs at St. Charles Cancer Center, supportingalltypes of cancer, not just breast cancer. The centerpiece for the evening is a Fashion Show of some professional, some non-professional, designed hospital gowns. We all know the 'stock'hospital gownsas impersonal, lacking any style orcharacter, tattered & overly worn and do nothing at best, to boost the spirit of those wearing them. Well...... watch out ladies---you could be wow'd with these!!!

And during this sameevening, the very creative, 20+ BRA CHALLENGE whimsical bras will go to auction!!!!

(If you don’t want yours sold, let Kathy Wrightson know ASAP!!!)

Time: Event hours~5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Included in the price of the ticket is light dinner fare (pasta bar, potato bar, veggies, appetizers, etc.) No-host bar available.

Tickets Price: Tickets go on sale February 1st for the price of $75. (If you are one of the designers, you are given a special rate of $50 for this event.) Seating will be tables of 10

Additionally: SRWC 'Designers' attending will haveseats near the catwalk for excellent viewing, and will be recognized individually for their artwork (bra).

One More Thing: The event committee is looking for about 10 ladies to help behind the scenes, assisting models, setting up auction items, taking tickets at the door, etc., etc. Volunteers will attendfreealthough will not be seated at the 'paying' tables.

All this being said,we think this sounds like a fun evening and what a way to support this disease that many have first-hand experience with!If any of you would like to volunteer, please email me (Kathy)ASAP.If any of you are interested in attending the evening for the discounted price of $50., please email me or call (541-593-6135). We need to get our reservations in soon. We already have 5 ladies planning to attend, and word is hardly out ~~~~ join us and help support this worthwhile cause!!!

PS: There is also a "March Madness Man Cave" for the gents, should any of your significant others wish to attend as well.
