Welcome Class of 2020 !!

You are the class of 2020, and you will be an important part of Penncrest’s continued success and rich traditions - in academics, athletics, and the arts. Be proud freshmen and make Penncrest the best ever!

You are part of the high school community. What you do and say will be noticed by many people. As a result, you play a role in shaping Penncrest’s image. Do your best through not only your words but also your actions to build a positive image of Penncrest. Make Penncrest your school. Make it a great school!!!

What can I do if things aren’t working out?

If you have a problem or a question, Mrs. Graham, the 9th grade counselor, is here to help you. You are part of the solution to any problem. Together we can arrive at a solution to address problems. Scheduling is an obstacle at times. There will be times when patience is required. Learn how to make an appointment…

How do I make an appointment?

Visit the Guidance Suite which is located across the rotunda from the nurse’s office in the morning. Find the appointment book designated for freshmen. Try to schedule during a study hall or your lunch. Do not miss any academic time. Mrs. Espinosa will then write a pass for you. On the day of your appointment present your pass to the teacher at the beginning of the period. When you are excused, report promptly to the guidance office. Mrs. Graham looks forward to working with you.

How can I join an after-school club or activity?

Now is the time to explore clubs, athletics, and activities that take place in and outside of school. After you graduate, colleges and employers are looking for well-rounded students who have not only done well academically, but have been involved in extracurricular activities. They are also looking for students who show teamwork and leadership skills. By joining a club, sport, or activity, you will learn to develop these skills. Check out our Activities and Athletics Directory on Penncrest’s website. Use this as a guide to explore your extracurricular options. Contact the sponsor or coach for information about joining.

How do I get working papers?

The Child Labor Law requires that you obtain an employment certificate before you begin full-time or part-time work. You must be at least 16 years old and have a job in order to secure the certificate for full-time work. You must be at least 14 years old in order to secure a part-time or vacation certificate for work done after school or during vacation - including summer vacation.

You may obtain a work certificate in the Main Office (8:30 - noon). Bring a proof of age such as a birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or passport. At age 14 or 15 you are limited to 18 hours per week (part-time), except during summer vacation time when 40 hours per week is the limit. At this age you are prohibited from working before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m.

Grade Point Average (G.P.A.)

G.P.A. is a feature of high school that is very important to freshmen. Some high school students believe that their freshman year “doesn’t count”. In fact, the first year in high school is a critical year for establishing your G.P.A. Your grade point average is a cumulative, numerical representation of your grades. For Penncrest students, that number ranges from 0 - 4.33. The grade point average is calculated beginning in the first marking period of ninth grade and ends with the fourth quarter of senior year.

Keep Track of Your Grades

You should always know your status in class. Just like last year, you and your parents will be able to access your grades on-line through the Home Access Center. If you have any questions about your grades, ask your teacher for clarification. Make sure to study well in advance for tests and quizzes---time management and organization are keys to success. Most importantly, COMPLETE ALL YOUR WORK, and TURN IT IN ON TIME!

Explore Naviance Family Connections

In 8th grade you were introduced to Naviance Family Connections, a web-based program that will help you track your progress throughout high school. Ultimately, it is the tool you will use to help you with the college application process. During freshman year, it can be used as a resource for keeping track of your activities, clubs, sports, and academic progress. You can learn more about yourself by taking an interest or career inventory. Additionally, you can use Naviance Family Connections to learn about colleges. Explore!
