Frequently Asked Questions: Kaul Pediatric Research Award

(Compiled from 2016 and 2017 cycles)

Statement regarding Human Subjects for all applications: Include all sections required for a NIH application if human subjects research is applicable. Quality Improvement projects (that are not research) are exempt from IRB review (see IRB guidance). If you have any question about whether your QI project is also a research project, please contact Cari Oliver, the IRB QI Liaison at 975-3931 or .

Q. The guidelines say that “Salary support for the PI is not covered.” but they don’t mention other investigators. Do you know if this is an allowed cost?

A. Yes, co-investigator support will be considered if appropriately justified.

Q. Is there a word limit for the lay summary?

A. Please use the box provided on the form as a guide to the amount of space that is appropriate. As with the NIH form upon which the space is modeled, the information is intended to be brief (a few sentences).

Q. The instructions indicate that the limit for the proposal itself (including the specific aims) is five pages. Is this inclusive of references?

A. No – references (referred to in the KPRI table of contents as Literature Cited) does not count toward the 5-page limit. The 5 pages encompass only sections A and B (specific aims plus research strategy).

Q. Are Fellows eligible to apply for KPRI funding?

A. Those still in fellowship training are not eligible unless they have a faculty appointment at UAB beginning within 6 months of the start date of the award.

Q. The Table of Contents page lists a space stating "Number of Publications", do they want us to give them the total number of publications we have? Or do we need to attach any/some of them to the application?

A. The NIH guidelines allow for publications to be included in the appendix if they meet the following criteria:

  1. Manuscripts and/or abstracts accepted for publication but not yet published: The entire article should be submitted as a PDF attachment.
  2. Manuscripts and/or abstracts published, but a free, online, publicly available journal link is not available: The entire article should be submitted as a PDF attachment.

You can submit up to five of these, so the number on the line should represent the number of articles you attach (if any).

Q. Does the New Investigator Grant only allow for a Letter of Support from a Mentor who will aid the grantee via a Mentor Plan (i.e.,no additional letters of support are allowed)?

A. A letter from the mentor is required for new investigator applications, but letters from collaborators (though not required) are allowed as well.
