“Fremont County has a rich history of film production and was a center of Silent Movie production in the pre-Hollywood 1910s,” according the Friends of the Museum & History Center Chair Geraldine Collete. “Tom Mix was a star and we will feature one of his Silent Films,” she added. “Local resident Karol Smith organized area efforts to attract Motion Picture filming to the area in the 1950s and helped develop the Buckskin Joe movie set,” said Museum Curator Lisa Studts. “He went on to be the first head of the Colorado State Motion Picture Commission, the first such group in the country,” she stated. Dozens of Silent Movies were filmed here, in addition to at least 14 that were assisted by the film commission since 1950.
