Volunteer opportunities

The Franklin-McKinley Children’s Initiativehas created community-learning projects in local community organizations and locations. Feel free to choose from the following opportunities.

Avid program @ Yerba Buena High School

Volunteer as an AVID tutor/mentor by providing academic support and mentorship to youth at Yerba Buena High School. Volunteers are needed Tuesday and Thursdays, between 8am-3pm flexible hours.

California Community Partners for Youth (CCPY)

As a volunteer you get to experience working with youth at different San Jose High schools and middle schools. If you are a graduate student you can volunteer to help with public administration projects. Other community learning opportunities involve journalism, project evaluation, Teachers-in-training, Math and Science Tutors, art and recreation activities, and event management.Volunteers are needed Mondays- Thursdays, between 12pm-6pm.

Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County- CORAL After school Program

Volunteer as a Literacy Tutors, Organize enrichment and recreational activities such as art, dance, drama, and music for afterschool students. Volunteers work in the classroom with an after-school instructor to help in whatever activities needed to help children. The CORAL Program is located in over 21 schools. Volunteers are needed Mondays- Thursdays, between 2:30pm-6pm.

EMQ Families First

Volunteer to help students get mental health services for children and families primarily in schools, communities and houses. Stipended-internships available for eligible SJSU students enrolled in a Masters degree program in Psychology or related field. EMQ is looking for a volunteer who can commit to 20 hours a week.

Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative (FMCI)

As a volunteer you would be involved in community organizing, event/meeting planning, research policy issues, materials preparation (flyers, brochures, power points etc). Volunteers have flexible hours and can volunteer on weekends.

Mouse Squad

Mouse Squad provides different community learning opportunities. You can do research of Mouse Squad by helping with program surveys, standard correlation, data collection and evaluation. A volunteer would review student and teacher survey and assessments, revise assessments to be more effective, and compile results of surveys. You can assist the volunteer coordinator to match up volunteers to go to different schools. You can also volunteer to do volunteer training guiding new volunteers in program overview, volunteer procedures, tips on working with youth, and conducting webinars. Mouse Squad has flexible volunteer hours.

Parent Project

Help in a parent collaborative to help parents help strong-willed/out-of-control teens change behavior. Volunteers are needed Mondays- Fridays, 9am-5pm and one evening from 5:30pm-8:30pm.

Respect ourselves, accept responsobility (R.O.A.R) @Yerba Buena High School

Yerba Buena High School R.O.A.R program would like volunteers who have education field experience to help teach, advice, and be a role model to male students. Volunteers are needed Mondays- Fridays, between 3pm-5:30pm.

Volunteer as a fundraising and business/foundation outreach coordinator to support the Silicon Valley Leadership Center(SVLC). SVLC is looking for a volunteer who can commit to 20 hours a week.
