(If you have less than 12 students, the parts of Miss Green and Mrs Jones can be combined, as can Policewoman 2 and 3, and the cook and the gardener. The part of the assistant can be easily omitted. Anyone can play the parts of the customers who only appear in Scene 3 – which is an optional scene)

Scene 1 in the forest

Enter children who say “Ladies and Gentlemen, we present The Monster of (your town). Scene 1 in the forest”

(The monster is lying still on a table. Frankenstein and the assistant are on stage)

(Enter cook and gardener)

Gardener:Where are we, where are we?

Cook:I don’t know. Have you got the map?

Gardener:Yes, I have. (Looks at the map)

Cook:Where are we?

Gardener:I think......

Cook:Yes?

Gardener:I think...

Cook:Yes?

Gardener:I think we are lost!

Cook:Look, a big house.

(They go up to the front door and knock on the door)

Gardener:Hello Doctor Frankenstein, I am your new gardener.

Cook:I am your new cook.

Frankenstein:My name is Frankenstein. This is my assistant, Mr strange.

Assistant:Hello, I am the assistant.

Assistant/Cook:What’s that? (Pointing at the monster lying on the table)

Assistant:This is our experiment

Frankenstein:Push the button!

(The assistant pushes the button but nothing happens)

Frankenstein:Let’s try again tomorrow.

(They exit)

Later that night

Enter children who say “Later that night” and exit

(Enter gardener and cook)

Gardener:Look, the invention!

Cook: Don’t touch!

(Alice pushes the button and there is a loud noise and the monster comes to life and gets up)

Cook/gardener:Oh, no!

Monster:Grrrrhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Cook/Gardener:Aaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(The monster chases the cook and the gardener of the stage)

Scene 2 In the village shop*

*This scene could equally practise clothes vocabulary in a clothes shop etc

Enter children who say “Scene 2 in a shop in the village”

The Shopkeeper is on stage, sorting out the vegetables. Miss Green and Mrs Jones enter the shop)

Shopkeeper:Hello Miss Green, hello Mrs Jones. How are you?

Miss Green/Mrs Jones:Very well thank you, and you?

Shopkeeper:Very well. Can I help you?

Miss Green:Yes please, can I have some carrots.

Shopkeeper:Here you are. Anything else?

Miss Green:Can I have a packet of crisps.

Shopkeeper:Here you are. Anything else?

Miss Green:No thank you.

Mrs Jones:Have you got any milk?

Shopkeeper:Yes I have. How many bottles?

Mrs Jones:Two bottles.

(Enter monster)

Monster:Grhhhhhh!!!!!!

Miss Green/Mrs Jones:Aaaaaaahhh! A monster, a monster!

Miss Green:A monster, call the police.

Mrs Jones:Police, help, help, there is a monster in the vegetable shop.

(They all hide under the table)

(Enter police but they don’t notice the monster)

Policewoman 1:Where is the monster?

Miss Green, Mrs Jones, Shopkeeper:There! (Pointing at the monster)

(Suddenly Policeman 2and 3 see the monster and tries to warn Policewoman 1 but Policewoman 1 doesn’t listen)

Policewoman 2, 3:Sergeant, sergeant!

Policewoman 1:Quiet! What’s your name?

Policewoman 2, 3:Sergeant, sergeant!

Policewoman 1:Shut up Henry, I am speaking.

Policewoman 2, 3:Sergeant, sergeant. It’s a.... It’s a...

Policewoman 1:It’s a what? (Very annoyed)

(Policewoman 1 turns round and sees the monster)

Policewoman 1,2,3:It’s a monster! Aaaahhh!!!!!!

(Everyone exits except monster)

(Enter Jane)

Jane:Hello

Monster:Grrrhhhh!!!!

Jane:What’s your name?

Monster:Grrrrrhhh!!!!

Jane:What...... is....your.....name? (Saying it very slowly)

Monster:N...n...n...name?

Jane:Yes, what is your name? My name is Jane.

Monster:My name is monster.

Jane:You can be my friend.

Monster:Jane, my friend.

(Enter Policewoman 1, 2 and 3)

Policewoman 3: Look, the monster!

Policewoman 2:The monster!

Policewoman 1:Get him!

(Exit Jane and monster chased by the police)

Scene 3 In a restaurant (This scene can be omitted)

Enter children who say “Scene 3 in a restaurant”

Waiter:Hello, everyone, welcome to my restaurant.

Enter 2 customers

Waiter:Hello, can I help you?

Customer 1:Yes, we’d like a table for 2.

Waiter:Here you are.

Customer 2:Have you got a menu?

Waiter:Here you are. Would you like something to drink?

Customer 1:I’d like an orange juice, please.

Customer 2:I’d like an apple juice, please.

Waiter:Here you are.

While the customers are looking at the menu the monster comes forward and takes the orange juice.

Customer 1:Where is my orange juice?

Customer 2:I don’t know.

While the customers are looking at the menu the monster comes forward and takes the apple juice.

Customer 2:Where is my apple juice?

Customer 1:I don’t know.

Waiter:Hello.

Customer 2:I’d like chicken and chips,please.

Customer 1:I’d like fish and chips, please.

(the waiter goes away and comes back)

Waiter:Here you are.

While the customers are looking awaythe monster comes forward and takes the chicken and chips.

Customer 2:Where is my chicken and chips?

Customer 1:I don’t know.

While the customers are looking away the monster comes forward and takes the fish and chips.

Customer 1:Where is my fish and chips?

Customer 2:I don’t know.

Waiter:Is there a problem?

Customer 1, 2:Where is our food?

Monster:Excuse me!

They all turn round.

Monster:Grrhh!!!!!

Everyone:Ahhhhhhh

They all exit running followed by the monster.

Scene 4 Frankenstein’s castle

(Enter Frankenstein, assistant, cook and gardener. They discover the empty table with no monster on it)

Assistant:Where is the monster?

(Enter monster)

Monster:Grrrhhhh!!!!!!

Frankenstein:Where have you been?

(Sound of police cars)

Cook:What’s that?

(The gardener runs to the window and sees the police)

Gardener:It’s the police!

Assistant: Hide the monster!

(The assistant throws a sheet over the monster to hide him. The monster stands in the middle of the stage with the sheet over his head, not moving as Policewoman 1,2,3, Shopkeeper, Miss Green and Mrs Jones enter)

Policewoman 1:Have you seen a monster?

Assistant:No, no.

Monster:Grrrhhhhhhh!!!!!

Policewoman 3:What was that?

Frankenstein:Nothing.

Policewoman 1:Have you seen a monster? (Asking the cook)

Cook:No, no.

Monster:Grrrhhhhhhh!!!!!

Policewoman 1:Hmme... what’s this? (Policewoman 1 goes up to the covered monster and says “Grrrhhh!” to see if there is a reply)

Policewoman 1:Grrhh!

Monster:(Very loudly) Grrrrrrhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Policewoman 1:Aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

(There is a chaotic fight and the police capture the monster. Enter Jane)

Jane:Stop, stop, he is not a monster.

Everyone:Who are you?

Jane:My name is Jane and he is my friend.

Monster:Jane ... my friend.

Jane:He is not bad, he is friendly.

Frankenstein:Friendly, friendly. My experiment is a success! Hooray.

Everyone:Hooray, hooray.

Monster:Monster is hungry.

Cook:Hungry, Ok, I will cook a big dinner for everyone, come on!

Everyone:Hooray! Hooray!
