COURSE: FITNESS WALKING

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students to improve cardiovascular fitness by walking. The course is completely activity based and suggested for those who are self motivated. Various walking activities and assessments will be used throughout the class. This class is outdoors, therefore, students should be prepared to walk in ANY TYPE OF WEATHER.

Fitness walking provides the student with:

·  Behaviors, knowledge and skills to promote participation in a lifelong fitness activity.

·  Ability to analyze personal fitness

·  Understanding proper walking techniques

·  Correlation between nutrition and a walking fitness program

·  Contribute to wellness throughout life

GUIDELINES FOR APPROVED CLOTHING IN FITNESS WALKING

Students should be prepared to walk in ANY TYPE OF WEATHER! A change of clothes should be brought and stored in the provided PE lockers in order to change into daily. T-Shirts, shorts with no pockets, sweat pants, sweatshirts and TENNIS SHOES AND SOCKS! NO OTHER FOOTWEAR IS ACCEPTABLE FOR THIS COURSE. Appropriate outdoor attire is needed for all types of weather conditions. You may wear sweatpants, sweatshirts and coats for cold weather.

Change of Clothes- Students will be required to dress out daily. They will be responsible for bringing a change of clothes to change into.

1.  The uniform is to be washed each week. A change of clothes is necessary (street clothes may not be worn in gym class).

2.  Students must wear a grey t-shirt.

3.  Students must wear black gym shorts. As cold weather approaches, students will be permitted to wear black or grey sweatpants.

4.  Clothing worn in Weight Training must be appropriate for the day’s activities and must be conducive to free movement and safety.

5.  Approved gym clothing must conform to the following:

a.  Proper fit/length

b.  No exposed bottoms belt loops, zippers, or pockets

c.  No tank tops or midriffs (you can have shirts with the sleeves cut off).

d.  Approved cut off sweat pants (no blue jean cut offs

e.  No boxer underwear for outerwear

f.  No spandex unless worn under shorts

g.  Socks and tennis shoes must be worn

Spiral Notebook- Students will log their daily activities and steps in their notebook.

Writing Utensil- pen or pencil needs to be brought daily.

NOTE: Grades will be posted (by student number) every 2 weeks.

ATTENDANCE, EXCUSES, AND TARDINESS

1.  All excuses must be brought to the nurse BEFORE SCHOOL ON THE DAY YOU MISS.

2.  A parent may excuse you from participation for three consecutive days. After three days, a doctor’s note is required. YOU MUST ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR MAKE UP WORK.

3.  If the nurse excuses you from the day’s activity you still need to dress out (unless the instructor tells you differently).

4.  A student will be required to make up the following absences;

a.  Excused absence from school

b.  Office

c.  Guidance office

d.  Field Trip

e.  Parent request or doctor’s note

MAKE UP WORK

The student will be responsible forturning in an article review for every absence.

1. Written reports

a. Title of article: The article must pertain to something in their subject

b. Title of publication: The article must be taken from a magazine, newspaper, book or approved internet sites.

c. Date of printing or creation

d. Body: The body of the report should summarize feelings of the article. Next state your reaction to the article. Do you think the article was worth writing about? How would you categorize the article?

e. Turn in copy of the article.

NOTE:

**If a student is absent on a test day, make up can only be done before or after school. The student will need to see the teacher to make arrangements. The same test will not be administered for make up.

CLASS STRUCTURE

Every student should be in the locker room when the bell rings. All students are expected to dress out everyday. You are allowed five minutes to dress before class and five minutes to dress after class.

After you dress into and out of your gym clothes, you will stay in the locker room till the instructor tells you to leave. DO NOT LEAVE THE LOCKER ROOM UNTIL YOU ARE INSTRUCTED. Any student that is past the yellow line will be subject to disciplinary action. After class students are required to stay in the locker room until the bell rings for class dismissal.

NOTE:

**Francis Howell North will not provide clothing for students leaving articles in school lockers or at home. Do not forget them!

Points will be deducted on a graduated basis for non dresses:

1. There are no freebies.

2. If the student is not dressed out they will lose their participation points for the day (5 points).

3. If the student does not dress out they will be given an alternate assignment to do (i.e., article review, worksheet, etc.). If the student refuses to do the assignment, it is direct disobedience and the student will receive a detention.

4. On the4th no dress the teacher will make a parent/guardian phone call.

5. On the 6th no dress the teacher will make a parent/guardian phone call.

6. On the 7th no dress the teacher will request a parent/teacher/administrator meeting.

DO NOT ASK FOR EXTRA CREDIT.

I have also read and understand the dress out policy for all physical education classes. I understand that if I do not dress out a total of SIX (6) times, I will be dropped from the class with an “F”.

I understand that the Francis Howell School District is not liable for any lost articles in the Physical Education locker rooms. Articles include, but are not limited to, books, locks, wallets, purses, backpacks, clothing, money and electronics. The Francis Howell North Physical Education Department cannot guarantee the Men and Women’s locker room to be secure. Please do not bring any items of value to the locker rooms. If you must bring valuable items to school please store them in your school locker. The Physical Education Department cannot store any items in the coaches’ offices.
