FOURTH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT ROTATION IN

REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGY AND INFERTILITY

ROTATION OUTLINE

The Fourth Year Medical Student Elective in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UIC will strive to expand the Student’s knowledge of basic reproductive physiology and infertility. The Student rotates through a busy clinical service where advanced cases of infertility and reproductive endocrinology are managed. This rotation includes participation in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures and endoscopic surgery. The Division consists of a Board Certified reproductive endocrinologist, nurses, medical assistants and embryologists. Approximately 6-10 new patients are seen weekly and 10-14 ART procedures are done during the two IVF weeks monthly in the Outpatient Care Center (OCC) facility. In addition, about 2-3 surgical procedures are performed in the University Hospital (UIH) on 2-3 Mondays per month. There is also an opportunity to observe saline infusion sonography (SIS’s) and hysterosalpingograms (HSG’s). Friday REI conference, Friday afternoon Grand Rounds and Morbidity & Mortality conference are part of the weekly didactic experience. One Third year OB/GYN resident rotates in REI and he/she is a great resource to get acquainted with the activities in the REI Division and the Department. There is also a First year resident rotating in REI, but their main emphasis will be in the Family Planning service, except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or when the Third year resident is absent due to vacation. Ample time for study and for review of various pertinent clinical topics is allocated during the rotation.
