Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Is 66:10-14c Gal 6:14-18 Lk 10:1-12, 17-20 or 10:1-9 (102)
“When you see this your heart shall rejoice, and your bodies flourish like the grass; the Lord’s power shall be known to his servants”… “The Lord appointed a further seventy two and sent them in pairs before him to every town and place He intended to visit…the seventy two returned in jubilation saying: ‘Master even the demons are subject to us in your name.’”
How remarkable that the Lord selected twelve, then chose and sent the seventy two on a mission. His person attracted them, His call was personal, His message filled with challenges and hope. As they began their work, perhaps they were not truly aware of its importance, or afraid that they would fail.
God’s plan for them included bestowing power, another word for grace, to enable them to meet confrontation, obstacles and barriers. They returned, reporting how great their experience was. Jesus, like a patient parent listening to an excited child, took it all in. Wow, I know, didn’t I tell you we’re going to be like lambs before wolves?
Do you realize that as a baptized Christian, Jesus has given you a mission? As you view your world, what place needs to meet the Lord to make it a better place? How will the message and mission be accomplished if not through you? It started with two sets of brothers, then twelve, then seventy two. He wishes to send more today. Eat From the Right Fruit
St. Irenaeus of Lyons warns us against people who claim to know what they can’t possibly know. Listen to the teaching of the Church, and ignore those who claim to know better.
The Church has been planted in this world like a Garden of Eden. Thus the Spirit of God says, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden: (Genesis 2:16)—that is, “Eat from every Scripture of the Lord, but you must not eat with a proud mind, or touch any heretical discord.”
For these men claim that they themselves have the knowledge of good and evil, and they set their own impious minds above the God who made them. Thus they form opinions on what is beyond the limits of understanding.
This is why the Apostle says, “I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment” (Romans 122:3): so that we won’t be cast out of the paradise of life by eating the knowledge of these men—that “knowledge” that knows more than it should.
St. Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 5.20.2
This Sunday, Jesus tells us “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” He then instructs us on how to be those needed laborers, starting with a greeting of peace.
Two millennia later the U.S. Bishops elaborated on Jesus’ message in The Challenge of Peace. They wrote: “Because peace, like the kingdom of God itself, is both a divine gift and a human work, the Church should continually pray for the gift and share in the work. We are called to be a Church at the service of peace, precisely because peace is one manifestation of God’s word and work in our midst” (1983: 23). Now that NYU classes have ended for the summer, the 5:30 Mass has resumed here, at St. Joseph’s Church, on weekdays.

LETTER FROM THE PASTOR
This past Friday, Charles Martin resigned as our Parish Manager. During his two years of service he made significant contributions to our parish,
especially in the area of financial record-keeping. We thank Charlie for all his service and wish him the best. He will be missed.
With Charlie leaving the position of Parish Manager, a parishioner, John Schultz, M.B.A., will be joining our staff as a volunteer and he will assume the role of Parish Manager.
We will be having a number of guests during July. Bro. William O.P., from our Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. will be working as a chaplain at Sloan-Kettering; Fr. Paul Murray, O.P. will be here most of July from Rome where he is a professor of Spirituality; Fr. William Reynolds, S.J. will be here for the month of July from Maynooth Seminary in Ireland where he is the spiritual director of the seminarians.
We welcome all of these to our community of St. Joseph’s.

The Cardinal’s Appeal
We are currently at the $50,000 mark of our total goal for $70,000 for the 2013 Cardinal’s Appeal. We would make this goal if every parishioner pledged or gave at least something to this important campaign. So far, only 108 have participated.
Besides helping poor parishes, the church’s outreach to the elderly and young is dependent on the generosity of those who are better off.
In addition, this is our opportunity to repay the Archdiocese pervious subsidy of St. Joseph’s as one of those poor parishes.
If you have not yet given to the Cardinal’s Appeal, please take a white envelope which is available on the tables in the Narthex and make a pledge today.
Over 100 Years of Educating Women
Grace Institute is currently accepting applications for its TUITION-FREE Business Skills Program!
This six-month training program teaches women the skills needed to succeed in the workplace. The program includes an in-depth study of computers, featuring the Microsoft Office Suite, keyboarding, business writing & communications, and career development. All graduates receive job placement assistance.
Classes meet Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm and begin October 4, 2013. Over 100,000 women have graduated from Grace and have moved on to careers at top New York City corporations.
Qualified applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, fluency in English, and eligibility to work in the United States. Grace Institute is located at 1233 Second Avenue (between 64th and 65th Streets).
