Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 21, 2014

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Last week we were greeted with the disturbing news that a group called Out@NBCUniversal will be allowed to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, a Catholic Irish parade which has been going on since 1762. Over the past two decades homosexual groups have been trying to enter the parade under their own banner so as to say to us: we participate in immoral behavior that the Church defines as disordered, that is against the natural law and sinful and we want to march in a Catholic procession. Could the realm of the absurd grow ever deeper? Since Cardinal O'Connor's time as Archbishop of New York, the requests of homosexual groups to march in the parade under their own banner have been rightfully denied, but last year Guinness Beer withdrew its sponsorship from the parade run by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. I am confident that other sponsors have withdrawn support. This phenomenon is happening to the Boy Scouts too who have seen UPS, Northrop Corp., and others withdraw their financial support of the Scouts forcing them to compromise their principles and their right to freely assemble.

What bothers me most is that Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York said that he has confidence in the decision of the Ancient Order of Hibernians to allow the Out@NBCUniversal to march in the parade, a parade which will pass by the Cathedral of St. Patrick and will have His Eminence as the Grand Marshall! He said, “I have no trouble with the decision at all. I think the decision is a wise one.” I am confident that men and women who have homosexual attraction have been in the parade, after all they make up about 2-4% of the population. There are also pedophiles, prostitutes, drug pushers, Mafiosi, etc in the parade and amongst the spectators, but do we allow these people to march under their own banners? Could we see in the future the Cosa Nostra for Justice, Prostitutes for Legal Status, or Keep Abortion Legal banners? On top of this a pro-life Catholic organization has been denied space in the parade prompting the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights which has participated in the parade for 20 years to withdraw from the parade.

But what is most disturbing is that the Archbishop of New York has acquiesced to the decision. St. Augustine warned about this desire of the shepherds to be fed and clothed by the sheep rather than the shepherd feeding his sheep. The honors of office, represented by the red robes and miters, are not to be esteemed over the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and over virtue, holiness and spiritual fortitude in the face of persecution which today takes the form of withdrawal of financial support and non-stop slamming from the media, a.k.a. the entertainment world. We as Catholics need to stick to our guns and defend the Church and her teachings even when it means loss of status, wealth and even liberty. Right now in Iraq, Catholics are losing their lives to remain Catholic under the threat of Islamists like ISIS who demand under the threat of death that Christians in their conquered territories either deny their faith in Christ Jesus and convert, leave their homes, or die. Let us pray that Cardinal Dolan may be strong in the face of opposition for we are all weak and can only find our strength in our faith in Christ Jesus. I leave you with these words of St. Augustine:

Yes, clothing can well be taken to mean honor, since it covers nakedness. For every man without exception is weak. And who is any man placed over you except someone just like yourself. Your pastor is in the flesh, he is mortal, he eats, sleeps and awakens; he was born and he is going to die. In himself he is, when you think of it, simply a man. But it is true that you make him something more by giving him honor; it is as if you were covering what is weak
