Using the Thrane and Thrane Explorer 500 for the First Time

Before using the Explorer 500, you will need to ensure that you have a sim card inserted in the terminal. This is located on the bottom of the terminal under the battery.

Although it will work without any additional software, it is recommended to have installed the Launchpad Software program. This can be downloaded at http://www.g1sat.com/Support.aspx. Click on the BGAN / Inmarsat Logo.

You also will need to have obtained a GPS fix on the Explorer. You can do this by setting the Explorer 500 outside with the antenna pointing up towards the sky. Try to have as much view to the horizon as possible in all directions.

Ethernet (recommended):

When connecting your laptop to the Explorer 500 using the Ethernet port, be sure that you have first disabled any wireless networking connections or Mobile GPRS or Mobile Data cards. Make sure your IP Settings are

Restart your laptop with nothing connected to your Ethernet port Except the Explorer 500.

Your computer should be assigned an IP address from the Explorer 500. If it is not, you may need to renew your IP address. You can do this by opening up a command prompt ( Start / Program / Accessories / Command Prompt) Type: ipconfig /release [enter]. Then type : ipconfig /renew [enter]. This should force your network adapter to request an IP address from the Explorer 500.

USB:

You must first download the current USB drivers. You will find them at www.g1sat.com/support.aspx

Click on the Thrane &Thrane logo and follow the links to the Explorer 500 Software.

The USB installation requires several steps that are outlined in a supporting document zipped in the usb software. It requires you to move a file into a certain location, then run the software installation at least 2 times in order to install two seprate drivers for proper installation.

With the Explorer 500 turned on and connected to your computer, launch the Launchpad software that you have previously installed. **NOTE, if you have pressed the OK button and taken the Explorer out of pointing mode, you may encounter an error when using the Launchpad software. You will need to restart the Launchpad software and the Explorer.
