Part 2: Reading Practice for the HKDSE

Finish Paper 1 of SET 5 (Reading Part A, Part B1 and Part B2) in Complete Exam Practice.

Part 3: Preparation for the SBA (Part A: Individual Presentation)

*Assessment dates will be released after the new school year begins.

Part A (Reading & Viewing Programme): Print/Non-print, Fiction/Non-fiction (Individual Presentation)

Requirements / arrangements (adapted from the SBA Teachers’ Handbook)

1.  You are required to give an individual presentation on a chosen text (about 3 to 5 minutes). The text can be a print fiction, non-print fiction, print non-fiction or non-print non-fiction. However, you should NOT choose a text that you have done for any previous SBA. The text that you choose should be in ENGLISH. For example, an Indian film with English subtitles is not allowed as the language spoken is not English.

2.  Assessment task

You have to promote a book or a film (it can be a print fiction, non-print fiction, print non-fiction or non-print non-fiction) to your classmates. You may include the following in your presentation:

-  the title of the book / film and the name of the author / director;

-  the genre of the book / film;

-  a summary of the book / film;

-  explain why you have chosen to promote the book / film;

-  share what you like most about the book / film;

-  share what you have learnt from the book / film;

-  talk about the aspects that you think the book / film can be improved;

-  mention anything else you think is important about the book / film.

Try to be persuasive and encourage your classmates to read the book or watch the film.

3.  The individual presentation will be carried out during class time or after class depending on the teacher-assessor’s arrangement.

4.  You must NOT read aloud or jot any notes during the assessment.

5.  Students are only permitted to refer to brief notes or prompts (maximum of ONE 4x6 note card) or PowerPoint slides in POINT FORM only during the assessment. These notes or PowerPoints are NOT part of the formal assessment and will NOT be taken into account in the assessment.

6.  The teacher-assessor will check your note card before you start doing your presentation. If you are found to include too detailed notes or even a full script on the note card, you will NOT do the presentation on the day of the assessment as you may have a strong tendency to depend on the notes heavily. Any students who depend on notes will score no higher than 2-3 marks in Vocabulary & Language Patterns and Ideas & Organization. The assessment day and time will be decided by drawing lots on the following assessment days.

7.  The teacher-assessor may, if she wishes, interact individually with you at any time to ask specific question(s) to clarify and/or extend your ideas, to help prompt and/or scaffold your oral interaction and to probe the range and depth of your oral language skills.

8.  Each individual presentation will be video-recorded.

9.  Assessment will be based on the SBA Assessment Criteria for Individual Presentation.

10.  Marks of the SBA will be submitted to the HKEAA.
