The Chippewa National Forest (CNF) is seeking a candidate to fill apermenant Forestry Technician(Recreation/Timber Sale Preparation)position in Deer River, MN.

This outreach notification is being circulated to inform prospective applicants of the upcoming job opportunity and to determine interest in the position. Responses generated by this outreach notification will assist us in determining the prospective applicant pool and best means of filling this vacancy.

Major Duties of this position include:

Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas. Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s). Serves as a unit fee collection officer. Inspects recreation areas and areas of concentrated public use for compliance with the management plans and public health and safety requirements. Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action. Cleans both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety. Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. Provides information on resource management practices, regulations, and current conditions. Collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation data management systems. Provides input for programming and planning. Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails.

Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with guidelines. Acts as a certified timber cruiser. Independently applies the instructions issued in a cruise plan. Takes and records tree measurements, assesses quality, and determines defect. Prepares and computer processes cruise data. Observes and reports areas of possible archeological significance and sightings of sensitive, threatened, or endangered wildlife species. Traverses harvest unit boundaries snf road locations, and determines area. Participates in other aspects of resource management support work such as recreation, maintenance, silviculture, tree planting, etc.

May perform law enforcement responsibilities using all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs), watercraft, and snowmobiles to patrol unit roads, trails, or waterways ensuring position of forest property and visitors. Takes appropriate action to enforce Federal Regulations and to protect life and property. Coordinates enforcement activities with local Forest Service law enforcement personnel.

NOTE: This position serves as a Forest Protection Officer, and as such, candidates must complete a background investigation to check for criminal history. The U.S. Government is authorized to ask for this information under E.O. 10677 and section 3301, of Title 5 of the U.S. Code; and parts 5, 731, and 736 of Title 5, Code of Federal Regulations.

Work Schedule: This position will be expected to work weekends and holidays as needed. The work schedule options may include Maxi-flex. Under a Maxi-flex schedule, a full-time employee has a basic requirement of 80 hours for the biweekly pay period, but may vary the number of hours worked on a given workday or the number of hours each week within the limits established by the Forest Service unit. Because the position functions within a team setting, consideration must be given to the team when planning a work schedule in order to accomplish job duties in an efficient manner.
