Forestry Leaf/Needle Collection
Directions: Create a leaf and needle collection of 5 species of trees. They can be collected anywhere they are found outdoors: the school, your yard, your neighbor’s yard, the park, etc. But just TREE leaves, not shrub leaves.
Due Date: Collection is due Friday, October 10th at the beginning of the hour.
Purpose: To give you better understanding of the wide variety of trees that are around you, and to give you practice at identifying trees and understanding their variety of characteristics, and proximity growing areas and their conditions.
Details and requirements of the assignment:
· Collect and mount 5 species into a small binder. The easy way to mount these samples are to take a clear sheet of paper (preferably white) lay the leaf or needles flat on the page after press drying them to 24 hours. Take wide scotch tape and seal the leaf to the paper.
· To complement the leaf mount, you must write the following information on the same page of the leaf in the binder:
o Latin name
o common name
o general location the leaf was obtained
o deciduous or coniferous
o opposite or alternate branching
o leaf shape and margin or needle length and number in a bundle
o typical height
o crown size and shape
o bark characteristics
· The leaf sample itself needs to be fully intact for deciduous, needles intact for spruce, fir, or cedar. For Pine the complete bundle must be intact, like five needles in a bundle for White Pine.
Scoring Rubric:
· SIX points per sample; 5 X 6 for 30 points possible.
· Points will be deducted for incomplete, missing, or damage to the leaf so it couldn’t be identified.
· Half a point will be deducted for each portion of information that is missing or incorrect. You will not receive negative points.
